Part of the Nandos chain — see all 99 locationsWe were born in South Africa, with a blend of Portuguese and British culture along the way. It all started in Mozambique, home of the hot sun, rich soil... and African Bird’s Eye Chillies. Also known as PERi-PERi. Small but mighty, these chillies have been used for centuries in local Mozambiquan cooking. The Portuguese then added a squeeze of lemon and kick of garlic to make the first PERi-PERi sauce. Used on just about anything, they found it was the ultimate baste for flame-grilling spatchcocked chicken. And it wasn’t long before two friends in Johannesburg came to experience the taste of PERi-PERi chicken and Nando’s was born. Fast forward a few years, restaurants and Fino Pittas and today, the Nando’s PERi-PERi you know and love still pays homage to those roots.
Staff has given verbal assurance of halal status. From the management: 'Our halal chicken is authorised by leading Halal Food Authorities. The quality, welfare and health of our chicken is a priority and our UK suppliers follow the strict Red Tractor Farm Assurance Standards. Our halal chickens are pre-stunned to minimise suffering and fear before they're hand-slaughtered. All our halal products are kept separate at our suppliers and in our distribution centres. And our restaurants with halal-friendly options are only allowed to receive chicken from our approved distribution centre. In these restaurants, we only serve chicken that's certified halal. And as we don’t handle any pork ingredients, there’s no chance of cross-contamination'
Score reflects a halal certificate on file.
Nando’s at Manchester Fort is one of the most highly-rated Nando’s restaurants in the city, but based on my experience, I’m struggling to understand why. A big advantage, though, is the free parking directly outside, although it can get pretty busy in the retail park and the car park overall. I was waiting for quite a while to be acknowledged at the door, even though the restaurant was mostly empty; they seemed really short-staffed, and a queue began to form, the service was slow in general, the line to order also seemed to be moving really slowly, I would advise ordering via the QR code if possible, although this wasn’t possible for me as I have an allergy. The manager who took my order seemed friendly enough and ran through everything on his iPad to confirm it was suitable, despite having a long wait to be seated, and to order, the food was coming out of the kitchen incredibly quickly, but once the food arrived, it was easy to understand why I’d much rather wait for the food to be cooked properly and fresh. I was disappointed with my meal in general. The chicken breast was way too thick, so it had dried out quickly, and it became really dry and stringy, and wasn’t too pleasant. The sides tasted like they’d been prepared well in advance and left out. especially the fries, which were overcooked and slightly soggy, the rice, which is usually one of my favourite sides at Nando’s, also wasn’t pleasant for the same reason. The interior is stylish and comfortable, and everything was well stocked and tidy, including the cutlery, napkins, and sauces. I also like the large windows, adding a reliance on natural light, combined with the usual Nando’s decor, although the communal red sofa looked like it had seen better days and could use a refresh. Fast-food quality food at restaurant pricing, I can’t help but feel annoyed to pay £16.50 for dry chicken and “old” rice and fries, especially as I had to bring my own mayonnaise as Nando’s no longer offer regular mayo as an option. I wouldn’t return to this Nando’s location.
