Part of the Nandos chain — see all 99 locationsWe were born in South Africa, with a blend of Portuguese and British culture along the way. It all started in Mozambique, home of the hot sun, rich soil... and African Bird’s Eye Chillies. Also known as PERi-PERi. Small but mighty, these chillies have been used for centuries in local Mozambiquan cooking. The Portuguese then added a squeeze of lemon and kick of garlic to make the first PERi-PERi sauce. Used on just about anything, they found it was the ultimate baste for flame-grilling spatchcocked chicken. And it wasn’t long before two friends in Johannesburg came to experience the taste of PERi-PERi chicken and Nando’s was born. Fast forward a few years, restaurants and Fino Pittas and today, the Nando’s PERi-PERi you know and love still pays homage to those roots.
Staff has given verbal assurance of halal status. From the management: 'Our halal chicken is authorised by leading Halal Food Authorities. The quality, welfare and health of our chicken is a priority and our UK suppliers follow the strict Red Tractor Farm Assurance Standards. Our halal chickens are pre-stunned to minimise suffering and fear before they're hand-slaughtered. All our halal products are kept separate at our suppliers and in our distribution centres. And our restaurants with halal-friendly options are only allowed to receive chicken from our approved distribution centre. In these restaurants, we only serve chicken that's certified halal. And as we don’t handle any pork ingredients, there’s no chance of cross-contamination'
Nando’s at The Trafford Centre ALWAYS seems to be busy. Whenever I’m passing through the mall, I always notice the crowds of people waiting outside, but I just can’t get behind the hype at this specific location. I did find the seating area to be a little uncomfortable, the tables are far too close to each other and I even struggled standing up without getting in the way, either at my table, or at the sauce/drink/cutlery station, it felt like they’ve tried to cram as many tables into the space as possible, which I can get as they certainly have the demand, but it just reduces the overall comfort. Despite being busy, my food came out almost straight away, which seemed great, but based on the quality, it is reasonable to see how they’ve decided to cut corners. I ordered a Medium Chicken Butterfly with Peri-salted Chips and Rice, which is my go-to order at Nando’s right now. My food was OK, but I’ve had better at other Nando’s locations; the fries were really dried out as if they had been reheated, and the rice had slightly clumped together, the chicken was fine, but again not up to their usual standards and not enough to warrant the £16.50 price. I was disappointed with the service here, too. I felt rushed eating my food, a staff member attempted to clear my plates on two occasions when I wasn’t done eating, and it really felt like they just wanted to get rid of me. I can understand being busy and wanting to sit down with new guests, but it just felt inappropriate. On a previous visit, I was also denied a larger glass or pitcher for my water, which meant having to make multiple trips to the fountain to refill a small glass. One thing I like about this location is how they have pumps for the sauces, but this seemed almost pointless as they didn’t have any pots to actually put the sauces in at the station, I did manage to request some, but the staff members struggled to find them, and the one provided was plastic which certainly isn’t environmentally friendly compared to the glass sauce bottles. I’m not sure it I would visit this Nando’s in a hurry, the whole experience feels like fast food at restaurant prices and it’s a huge letdown for me.
