š PROPER RUGBY VIBES & A MEAN GUINNESS šŗ "As a Google Local Guide with 9.5 million views, I appreciate a pub that knows exactly what it is. The Cottage on St Mary Street is a proper, traditional drinking establishmentāexactly what you want for a couple of pints in the heart of Cardiff. šŗ THE BLACK STUFF The bar staff are exceptionally friendly and serve a truly 'mean' pint of Guinness. Itās clearly a well-kept cellar here; the quality was top-tier and much appreciated in a busy city-centre environment. š MATCH DAY ATMOSPHERE We popped in while the Women's Rugby was playing, and the pub had a fantastic following. Itās a dedicated drinking pub rather than a food-led venue, which creates a brilliant, focused atmosphere for sports fans and locals alike. ⨠TRADITIONAL CHARM The interior is full of character with its leaded windows and classic wood-panelling (see my internal shots). Itās a welcoming, unpretentious spot that feels like a bit of a sanctuary from the modern high-street bustle. VERDICT: If youāre after a well-poured pint and a genuine Cardiff atmosphere without the 'gastro-pub' fuss, this is your place. Iāll certainly be back next time Iām in the city. š„šš“ó §ó ¢ó ·ó ¬ó ³ó æ
I donāt usually write reviews, but we felt we had to on this occasion. Came in one day last weekā¦.my god this pub has changed for the worse ! When we arrived we were not even greeted with a smile from either of the bar staff. Bar was not busy, but it seemed as if the staff didnāt want to serve us at all! When we were finally served, we were greeted with a āyes?ā We ordered our drinks with no conversation from the bar staff at all. This was our local and we were in at least 3/4 times a week - we felt valued and cared for as customers by molly and Kate, however we were pretty much dismissed by both staff behind the bar. The pub was absolutely pumping with music that would be more suited in the night club across the road, definitely NOT what the cottage is or was about - we couldnāt even hear each other over the table in a pub full of about 5 tables. Tables sticky, dirty glasses, toilets absolutely stinking and the whole atmosphere which was once a lovely pub to come to has completely changed. I donāt know who is in charge of these changes, but someone needs to have a long think about what this place now has become. We had heard from others that this pub had gone downhill, but with being away for a couple of months, we wanted to check for ourselves. The class has been completely strippedā¦.we will not be returning.
Our new favourite pub! Mike and his team were very welcoming and friendly. Great selection of drinks at reasonable prices. Live music was a great touch too, we will be back soon!
Really going to miss this 'proper' real Cardiff City Centre local pub. The regulars, including the adorable 'Sandy' will miss the great community spirit venue. The great staff, namely, Nathan, Katie and Molly made the supportive pub experience really special and this closure will be very sad for them.
It is a pleasant place to enjoy a drink with friends or to relax. very good music, excellent service and a place with a lot of history as it is one of the oldest pubs in Cardiff.
