About Jambo Grill & Good Morning Paan

Vancouver, British Columbia may be as far removed as you can get from Africa, but that didn't stop the family behind the affectionately named Jambo Grill & Good Morning Paan from opening up their restaurant here. Originating in Uganda in 1939, Jambo Grill specializes in fresh East African cuisine of the type rarely seen anywhere in the West - halal or otherwise - with dishes such as cassava fries in Pili Pili sauce, Kachori pastries with coconut and lentils, Mishkaki (Ugandan-style beef), Masai and Jungle ribs, and Kuku Poisson (a Cornish hen in Nairobi-style sauce). Those aren't even the house specialties, which include Masala fish and prawns, goat curry and Paya (goat legs in a spicy curry sauce). Jambo Grill is open for lunch and dinner with daily specials and a private party room fully equipped for any event (special orders available for large groups). Their logo is a symbol shaped like a betal leaf & the flame in a tandoor oven, with paan leafs falling into a jar of sweet syrup, on top of a large naan bread. Says it all, really.

Assalamalaikum brothers and sisters, I was a kitchen staff at Jambo Grill and I assure you that they serve a mixture of halal and non-hahal meat. They buy some of the meat from halal suppliers while the other is normal non-halal stuff. Their claim of serving 100% halal meat is absolutely wrong.. Besides, they use non-halal sauces such as oyster sauce in their grilled items (Eg. Masai ribs, Boneless ribs). You can inspect their freezer anytime to find non-halal items. So, its completely on you to decide whether you want to dine or not. Thanks, Jameel

This place is NOT Halal. They use a combination of Halal and non-Halal suppliers.

Food was awesome and we loved the masala steak. A bit on the expensive side but the food makes up it. They sell alcohol though so if you don't like that probably try elsewhere.

Have been there once: Took 10 mins before anyone could take order, and it wasn't packed. Staff were quite busy serving Goray, Chinese, and people with bling-bling. Beef dish arrived after 25 mins, quite plain, taste wasn't charming, and felt like rubber. Verbal confirmation of Halal was given. Liquor was served on mostly all tables. The place is very questionable if it's suitable for Muslims.

I thought I'd give this place a try because of all the reviews. We had the grill combo which had a mixture of masala fries, jungle ribs, tandoori chicken, a chicken kabab and a beef kabab and some salad; chicken curry, pili pili mogo and the paan. I liked the pili pili mogo those were fried cassava in a masala sauce. the jungle ribs were quite nice also. The other items were not really good enough to stand out as I usually eat those kinds of foods at home. The service was really good, and the staff was friendly. I did like the seating as it is much better than most indian/pakistani restaurants that are halal.

Can't praise this place enough, I found it thanks to Zabihah.com and I'll make it a must to stop here and get my fix every time I'm in Vancouver. It's a convenient location with easy parking and fairly upscale interior. I ordered the jungle ribs, the masala steak and the lollipop chicken and they were all some of the best I've ever had. I wish we had something like this in Chicago. Great selection that I'll have to try out but I'd definitely get ribs and steak every time.

Very Unique halal dining experience. We enjoyed the food tremendously. Ugandan style with a unique Desi twist! I will highly recommend this place. Owner is very personable, and assured us of the Halal meats. Pricey though. About Fifty bucks for 2 people.

Excellent place, solid food in all respect. The nachos are unique and rare in halal fare. I really enjoy this place, and staff are always very nice. The two areas of feedback I have are regarding inventory (they seem to run out of things too often, very difficult to get paan) and the other is they need to learn how to cook steak. Having ordered the masala steak twice, it has been grossly overcooked and as a result becoming excessively dry and quite repugnant.

My husband and I were visiting vancouver for the first time and we found this restaurant on Zabiha with great reviews. This restaurant had the best East African food I have ever eaten! My husband and children who are pakistanis loooved it. The naans were soft, warm and delicious, the mushkaki and tandoori as well as the ribs were so great to eat. I am so glad that we found this place. would definately recommend this place to anyone with or without a family. The owner and his fine staff trully deserve every bit of praise I have to give!

We were visiting BC for a week and ate at this place twice. The first time we ordered an appetizer platter as well as the grill combo. The appetizers were good. As for the main meal, the kabobs with naan, ribs and fries were all excellent. The second time we ordered pili pili wings, kabobs with masala potatoes and masala steak with pili pili fries. The wings were awesome and the steak was very good as well! We highly recommend that you visit this place if in Vancouver.

My family and I have eaten here on numerous occasions when in Vancouver and we have yet to be disappointed by the quality of the food. Very tasty and good portions. My son loves the Chicken Lollipops and the very tasty Naans. The tanddori chicken as well as the East African dishes are highly recommended.

My wife and I were visiting Vancouver from Washington state and out of all the restaurants we visited this was by far the best. The food was excellent and the service was very good as well. I will be eating here everytime I visit Vancouver inshaAllah.

One of my favourite restaurants in Vancouver! I highly recommend all the food, I have to have a disappointing meal. My personal fav combo is Tandoori chicken with a lovely mango lassi, but my family and I have tried a variety of dishes all of which were great. Menu and signage advertises a full Halal menu, and no alcohol served that I could see.
