A halal sign is clearly visible on the premises.. All food at this restaurant is certified halal.
Nestled among the diverse set of eateries around the 16th and Valencia intersection, Pakwan draws most of its customers from young Mission residents - although sometimes, you'll see a business lunch. Busy on weekend nights - plan ahead if you want a table.

I eaten chicken biryani. Its awesome. Definitely recommend.
I ordered the chicken biryani during my visit there. The portion was big. I can only finish half of the plate at that time. The staff there also is friendly.
Went here for an early dinner (approx 6pm) on a Sunday evening. The parking in this area (Mission District) is very difficult. When we got in there were plenty of seating, but they did not have a lot of the popular dishes available (no Haleem, no Nihari and No Chicken Kofta). So we just got some Tandoori Chicken, Seekh Kebabs and Daal along with some Naans. Food was good. Self-service like most Pakistani places, but this location did seem a little nicer in terms of decor and cleanliness. Downside: they let people bring in their own wine/beer, and the prices are a bit higher than other locations, but I guess because it\'s in a hip & trendy location of SF, they can get away with it. Complimentary tea was strong, but perhaps that was the dish soap that we could still smell in the cups! Tip: Ask the cooks (Mexican) to put some butter on your naan when you pick up your food- Naan tastes better with butter:)
Quailaty of food is good but the guy is at cash register is rude seems like he is giving us favor by serving us food ,other then that highly recommended Achari chicken.
A much better menu with better tasting food and naan at this Pakwan than compared to some competitors in SF. The restaurant is cleaner and better decorated (for a Pakistani-get-your-own-dishes-service kind of place), and the crowds are always present, supporting the deliciously seasoned foods. Probably my favorite Pakistani fare in the bay.
Great place...yummy tasting food...highly recommended.
The first South Asian place we ever ate in when we moved to the City. Carnival like atmoshphere, quick service, good food (yummy nihari). Fuel up here & then go explore the Mission!
Pakwan in the Mission definitely sets the standard when it comes to authentic Pakistani cuisine in SF. Both SF Pakwans are owned and managed by the same person and thus the signature dishes are reassuringly consistant. Any visit has to involve the chicken tikka masala although experimenting with the daily specials sometimes delivers other gems, such as the traditional haleem or the wonderfully fresh chicken keema, all reasonably priced. Take your friends and get ready to share!
Food was tasty, but service was not that good. Environment very shaggy and not clean. We were from out of town so our impression on the area was not great.
We went to Pakwan while we were vacationing at SF - great food. Simply loved it.
Love these guys. Go for them. Nihari is good. They've got a joint in Hayward too.
Each time i go to SF, Pakwan is my only choice. Excellent food and cheaper than most halal restaurants.
My very first halal joint I have been to in the city. I loved there chicken and the tomato ocra dish. The daal is superb. Very good.
Living in the Mission district of San Francisco, Pakwan was very welcome as the first halal restaurant in the neighborhood. The restaurant has become extremely popular with the local crowd and is now packed every night of the week. Alcohol is not served but people do bring their own. The naan is excellent, as is the tikka and bihari kabab. Their service can be friendly or really rude, depending on who is behind the counter. You can also order ahead for take-out.
"Pakwan in Tenderloin has closed, for whatever reasons the City won't let them reopen for now. There is a new location in a trendy area in upper Mission district. Same food and menu (Standard Pakistani grill with many varieties of Lahori-style kebobs and entrees, plus tandoori bread), same parking problems, slightly better 'hood, yuppie clientele. Expect prices to rise accordingly."
