It is not that bad restaurant. Food was't that much tasty. Portion of rice was really small that hardly can be enough for one person and it is expensive as well. The restaurant also is not very clean which I didn't like.

This is the worst Restaurant I have ever been to in 20 yrs of my life in USA. We waited for 1 hour after ordering just simple kabaabs and dal. The owner was extremely rude and didn't even bother after we complained about the time and simply told us to cancel the order and leave if we didn't wish to wait any further. It seemed that the owner and the chefs and waiters had a fight so all of them left the restaurant and was sitting outside. I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone.

Note--i'm the same guy on yelp I copy pasted my review from there here and added more to it that would be of concern to Muslims. Absolutely disgusting. We went on the 4th of July upon the recommendation of one of my dad's friends. I'm also not sure why people gave this place such high ratings, they probably have not had much experience with real desi food. In any case these were the problems we had: 1) Absolutely disgusting area. Wierdos everywhere, not the place for a family. Outside the place there were a bunch of homeless people and a crazy guy in night clothes. I feel horrible my wife and in laws (who are all female) had to be subjected to all that. 2) Low quality food. One of the other posters also mentioned they put a lot of black pepper seeds--I can attest to that, the chicken jalfrezi was good but filled with it. They also gave very little meat, rather they filled the dish with vegetables/sabzi. The chicken korma was horrible with no taste 3) We got ripped off on shrimp. They charged 10 dollars for the shrimp dish and we got only 5 shrimp. We asked to get charged less so they were nice enough to take off a charge for chicken tikka masala. 4) Slow service. We asked for naan, it took them 10 minutes to get it, by that time food was cold. 5) ALCOHOL. Openly served. I would not go here again--there are plenty of other businesses in the bay area that are clean and respectful to Muslim sensitivities and don't rip you off either.

Visited while on vacation with family. They were able to accomodate a very large group (20+) even though the place isn't that big. Food came quickly. It was very good, but not the best I've ever had. Restaurant was not overly dirty, but it definitely wasn't clean. The glasses came stained, so we drank out of our own waterbottles. Pretty cheap though; I'd go again for sure.

small. self served. Food is below average. Only good item is tandoori kabob and tikka. Rest of the food was coming out of cooler and then heated on stove. We tried several dishes but everyone of them came with whole black pepper, whole cloves and cinnamon sticks in it......................That didnt impress me at all. I will not go back to this place.

South Asian food in the heart of the city. It's in the Tenderloin area, so it's not a very nice neighborhood but its still worth going to. The seating is extremely limited, and its mostly self-service. The food is okay, and I would recommend going here more for take-out than dine in.

We got a table for two but soon enough we were joined by a third guest with more then two legs lets just say. They have really good business so i'm sure they can do something about the cockroach problem. The food is amazing. Allowing beer to be brought in def a lame factor.

The only reason this restaurant gets even a two star rating is due to the decent food. However, there are many other things that should be factored in. Yes, the place doesn't sell beer, but BEER IS ALLOWED to be brought from outside, which doesn't make sense as the place is suppose to be HALAL and everyone is drinking out of the same glasses. Second, the place is not clean at all, The two people below who have boasted about the place being clean posted a review the same day and are saying the same things. They both wrote they have been in th back of the kitchen, meaning they probably clean the grill there, so they have bias views. There isn't any fancy artwork, except for a drawing of the owner. Flies are always flying around the place and flying around your food. This website should be used to inform people with the right information and not bias opinions from people like the two similar ones below. Overall I agree with the reviewer right below, that the food is only good if you are doing take out.

I've been here multiple times and I absolutely love this place. It is definately my favorite desi restaurant for multiple reasons: the food is amazing...esp the chicken tikka masala, the atmosphere is great unlike any other desi place, Service is fast and good, and everyone is polite. You should definately try this place out!

Excellent Food, Excellent Decor, The paintings on the wall are amazing...and the food is definately great. I prefer it over Shalimar. Def one of the cleanest desi places in San Fran. Even though its always busy you never feel crowded. Staff is very polite. And I've been in the kitchen and I've never seen any boxed spices. But Alhum...the food is good you should def try it out esp the CTM.

I ate here twice in the past 6 months during visit to SF -- one eat-in, and one take away. Service is fast and good. The chicken tikka masala is good, but not as great as some here would have you think. Naans were burnt the 2nd time. Stay away from the spinach and aloo dish -- too spicy and bitter. Lamb biryani was outstanding.

If you are in SFO, and you miss eating here, you missed a lot. I would definitely recommend this place. The food is great. I was surprised to see the line of take-out customers at the counter, that extended outside the restaurant. Their tikka, kababs are the best. Unfortunately I was in SFO for a very short time, so I couldn't go back for a second time. I would go again if given the opportunity.

Ive been to Chutney's dozens of times. My extended family just goes their by default. My cousins love it because its not as "mirchi" as other restaurants and has a great ambience. But honestly, food at Shalimar tastes better, but Shalimar is a little traumatizing to eat in. Whereas Chutney is not totally authentic desi food (too blended, I bet they use boxed powder spices), but its not bad either (except dire lack of mirchi) and the ambience is great. Its decorated loft style with high ceilings and contmeporary exposed piping etc with nice rajastani prints on the walls. A better place to take someone out than Shalimar. Bathroom is cramped and not very clean. So great ambience, ok food.

Food not too bad and compared to most desi places stacks up well, however, their competitors across the street have better tasting food. Chutney has the better atmosphere though>.

You'd think that yet another curry house in the T-Loin would struggle to establish an identity of it's own. Chutney has certainly surprised me. For a unique taste, done extremely well, try the house special Chikr Channa. Even the CTM tasted more refined and flavorful compared to some of the more well-known neighbours. But for a biryani lover like me, the lamb and chicken varieties made my evening. At last decent biryani that won't burn your tongue off!

We visited this restaurant while on vacation in San Fran. We love indo pakistani food and found this restaurant to be excellent! It was clean, food was not too greasy, very reasonable prices, and the portions were generous. We had (2)sikh kabob, lamb korma, 2 naan, 3 drinks, lamb bryani, and (2) pc. chicken tandoori, all for $26 including tip. GO, Go, Go to this restaurant, de-lish!

A cut above the rest as far as food & ambiance goes though the service could be better. We have been here numerous times--the tandoori fish, naans, & veg dishes are particularly good. However on one of our trips they blackened the fish pretty badly so I sent it back. Lo & behold how do they resolve the situation? They send the SAME fish back with the blackened edges scraped off. Yo, boys, I could have done that myself at the table. When I approached the counterperson after the meal to give him some constructive criticism, he brusquely said that's the way the fish always was (not so, from 3 previous visits). I was so miffed I didn't go back for a year...but recently decided to give it another try. Food is still good. It does get a bit loud/smoky in there & they do still slightly char the fish. But on the up side, it won't give your stomach the gurgles like the place across the street.

I donno about all of you who think that the food is bad, but i honestly love the dishes at chutney. I've grown up eating in resteraunts in India and Chutney come the closest so far in taste. The place is clean and service is quick. No one stares at females or makes dirty jokes. Who cares if the cook used to be a cab driver or worked at shalimar...what matters is the good food...Just give it a try

After Shalimar being such a hype and all. I was dying to try something different and Chutney was it for me. Great location (right in front of Shalimar), clean (i mean it...spick and span) place, great customer service (they are young men who have great customer service skills and nice big smiles), and awesome food. I am in love with this place. Naans are huge and their seekh kabobs are to die for. Prices are very reasonable and yea they also take credit cards. Go and check it out..You'll fall in love with Pakistani curries too!
