Tex's Chicken & Burgers

Solid Fried Chicken place! Not the best for families, it's small and gets a lot of foot traffic from randoms. We got the spicy fried chicken sandwich ($8) and the Texas Hell ($9) sandwich which were both good!

This is a branch of the Texas Chicken and Burgers chain serving fried chicken, hamburgers, chicken sandwiches, wings, french fries, and the like. The Muslim staff assured me the entire menu is halal. This is a small branch on the corner of 116th and Frederick Douglass (who some people think is getting noticed more and more) Blvd in West Harlem. The neighborhood is home to predominantly African and African-American Muslims and there are masjids and other Muslim businesses nearby and its worth walking around. There are about 4 tables, each seating two people here, so it's mostly take-out which is unfortunate because the food is best served immediately. Parking is available on the street, but these are typical cratered NYC streets, so you best leave the 1981 DeLorean DMC-12 with the 5-speed manual at home (and keep it under 88mph). The star of the show is the fried chicken, available in regular or spicy. This author tried the 2-piece spicy combo served with a can of soda and french fries ($6). The chicken's crust is crispy and crunchy with just the right low level heat, and this fried chicken is certainly among the best of the halal fried chicken industry. The 1/4 pound hamburger is served with mayonnaise, ketchup, tomato, and lettuce ($4) is pretty decent and worth getting if you're not feeling the chicken. Halal fried chicken has certainly McDonaldized, but the chicken here is among the best and worth seeking out.
