Being one of several restaurants in the nation owned and operated by members of one of Afghanistan's most prominent families, The Helmand has helped introduce and popularize Afghan Cuisine in America within the last decade. The Helmand was named after the owner's first born son, as well as in honor of the famed Helmand River that runs through the predominantly dry country of Afghanistan, bringing vitality and nourishment to it's people.

A non-Muslim friend invited us to dinner at this restaurant and claimed that it is owned by Hamid Karzai's brother and that there are halal items on the menu. I unfortunately did not check with Zabihah.com and accepted the invitation. When I saw the bar inside the restaurant I already knew that I would not trust their claim of serving halal. The waiter pointed out 4 menu items that were supposedly halal and he later returned to say that only 3 of these were halal according to the owner. I did not trust him so I ordered the salmon dish. The food was good but I will not return to this place. I am rating it poor because I do not believe the word of a Muslim who trades in haraam.
