I am from Venezuela, but we buy halal meat because it is tastier. Primo has a good selection of livestock. Mainly chickens and guinea hens, but also some interesting things like rabbit, pigeon, cornish hen and a small selection of lamb. Just yesterday I bought fresh chicken from here. You choose the bird and it is then slaughtered in halal tradition (lucky animals--halal is the nicest way)...and the bird is then plucked and cleaned and cut. the whole process is about 10 mins. The owners are very friendly.
The concern I have is whether all meat sold here is halal. I think the chicken is probably halal. I bought baby lamb, and soon as I selected the one-week-old lamb, it was dragged to a back room where I could hear that a captive bolt gun was used to stun it. It was then cut up in a few minutes. I loved the meat--it was extremely tender and tasty...but I wonder if it is really halal the way it was killed.
I was there last weekend. The conditions are somewhat insanitary. I bought two chickens. The birds were rudely pulled out of the cage and slaughtered and packed in minutes. The meat was quite flavorful. It is always fun to buy and cook fresh meat :) I will go again.
