Can a Queensland Nasi Kandar hold its own against the legendary Penang original? That was the challenge when I tucked into the Special Nasi Kandar at Malaysian Kopi Talk, Surfers Paradise. The verdict? 🍚 Steaming hot, soft rice with generous portions. 🐟 Mild barramundi curry—gentler than its Malaysian cousin, clearly tailored for local tastes. Spice seekers need not worry; a dollop of sambal belacan quickly turns up the heat. 🥬 Okra, cabbage, carrots, cucumber and papadom provide the crunch factor. 🍗 Two chunky fried chicken pieces and a perfectly boiled egg with a soft golden yolk complete the line-up. Traditionalists may crave a fiercer curry punch, but taken on its own merits, this dish hits the spot—especially when hunger is your best seasoning. My compliments to the chef and team at Malaysian Kopi Talk. Would I recommend it? Absolutely. Any day of the week… except Monday, because they’re closed! 😆
