Part of the Guzman Y Gomez chain — see all 37 locationsGuzman y Gomez was founded in Sydney in 2006 by New Yorkers and childhood best friends Steven Marks and Robert Hazan. Steven, a former hedge fund manager, and Robert, who had a background in fashion wholesale and retail, both missed the authentic fresh flavours of Mexican cuisine that they had grown up with in America.
Staff has given verbal assurance of halal status. From corporate headquarters: 'The chicken at all GYG restaurants is Halal certified - a copy of the certificate can be emailed upon request. We do have Halal certified chicken across all our locations. We do however work with other non-Halal meats and we do not follow halal processes in the kitchen.'
Score reflects admin-confirmed halal status; no additional evidence on file yet.
GYG is an option for a quick Mexican-style meal. The service is always fast, and I like that there are plenty of sauce options to customise your meal. One thing I don't understand is why the barramundi burrito was removed. We live in Australia, and barramundi is one of our best local fish—it would be great to see more Australian ingredients featured on the menu. The bright yellow branding feels a bit dated and tacky. A more modern, fresh look would make the restaurants much more inviting. Overall, it's convenient fast food with different flavours and plenty of choice, but I think there's still room for improvement.
