Islamic Society of Baltimore

6631 Johnnycake Road, Catonsville, MD

Sunni (Traditional)

Also known as Masjid Al-Rahmah, The Islamic Society of Baltimore was established in 1969, where a handful of mainly immigrant Muslim families used to hold weekly meetings and Friday prayers at Johns Hopkins University. As the community grew there was a need for an established facility. In 1982, ISB purchased an 8-acre lot off Johnnycake Road in the western part of Baltimore County and built the Mosque (Masjid Al Rahmah). Several years later a housing complex was built next to the Masjid. Today, the compound also includes a fulltime school, a community hall, a kitchen, as well as a computer training facility. The ISB is in the process of developing a Community Learning Center on the existing premises, which will be designed and constructed to provide training, classrooms and laboratories to conduct educational programs. This will include computer technology, language classes and many other courses to enhance social and economic benefits to the community at large. It will provide adequate space for lectures, seminars, conferences and community meetings.

Very large masjid with a very active community, plenty of parking and facilities. Still active as of January 2011. I'm pretty sure 'Asr is prayed based on the earlier Shafi'i time, check their website for the current time.

Masha'allah a very active and vibrant masjid. Reminiscent of the atmosphere in Chicago. 5 times daily prayers are offered here, and the community here is blessed with many huffaz. Masha'allah this place is also active in the work of Da'wah/ tabligh/propogation.

I used to be a regular at ISB some years back. It is masha'allah a good multicultural community serving a wide range of Muslims. What I like about ISB is its lack of prentensions, which I guess goes with anybody who cares to live in Gotham City aka Baltimore. Or shall we say is forced to live in. Due to its prmoximity to DC, often celebrity guest speakers show up out of the blue. Like Dr. Israr Ahmed, Anwar al-Awlaki and many others.

Large property with a Masjid and School. Very large community, diverse. Parking is very limited and the parking lot is basically one large paved lot that fills up quickly and then huge patches of grass and rocks.
