Islamic Center of Hayward

185 Folsom Street, Hayward, CA

Sunni (Traditional)

Also known as Mosque of Muhajireen, this is a mosque and gathering place to a diverse and dynamic community composed of, among others, indigenous Muslims and immigrants. The congregation is predominantly Afghan-Americans. The masjid is nestled on an acre-lot in a residential Tennyson-Alquire neighborhood. The masjid consists of a nearly 3,000 sq. foot building providing a main musullah (prayer hall) and a private sister's musallah. Jummah (Friday) prayers are held weekly. The Khutbah (sermon) starts at 1:15 p.m. The Iqama (Friday prayer) is at 2:10 p.m. The sermon is in Farsi except on the first Friday of each month when the bayaan is in English. Eid prayers, Taraweeh prayers, Iftaars, and other special Islamic and cultural events/holidays are also held at the Mosque of Muhajireen.

I love this masjid! I have attending Jumu\'ah here, and it is truly a blessing. Qari Safiullah is such a great man, one who I feel truly cares about the people attending the mosque. Such a man of honor and good manners! Definitely visit if you are able insha Allah. On Fridays, I believe there is also an area upstairs for the ladies.

I attend Jumu'ah here about once or twice a month. The speech is in Afghani (Pushto?), and the Mu'adhin sits at the back right-hand corner and translates but his English isn't very good and you have to strain your ears to hear him. I love the light and ventilation in this place. The side walls are lined with huge windows which are open during the day. I absolutely love it like that when I'm praying! Their parking is really big, and they start Jumu'ah at around 1:45pm so if you are late going to A St or Gading you can go here instead and will reach in time. I haven't seen any regular classes in English on Friday or any other day, but sometimes the Jamaat Tableegh brothers come and speak, and they go to people's houses and bring them to the Masjid and one of them stands up and speaks on Deen/Da'wah/Tableegh etc. I've been with them twice over there but none of them seem to be qualified to teach any more than you or me. It would be nice if the Imam/Khateeb gave English classes because he appears to know English. Overall nice place, with great potential for improvement.

The youth halaqa here has opened up to college students and adults. MashAllah this is by far the BEST ongoing and consistent halaqa I have ever seen. They get on average about 200 youth every Friday night. They get a host of speakers including Imam Zaid and SH. Hamza. Their website is www.haywardhalaqah.com. It has not been updated recently, but their halaqah is still going strong every Friday night. You can contact Farhad for more info at fbajawory@gmail.com and Ahmed at ahmadtarin@aol.com It's also for brothers and sisters and they get about half brothers, half sisters....definitely worth checking out if you're in town.

Great place. Location is great, people are great. This is a majority Afghan populated mosque. Wonderful people. The Imam at this mosque is very well versed in Islamic Knowledge and very easy to communicate with. They offer Five time prayers, Juma Salat, Taraweeh prayers, Hifz class and daily madressa for children and much more. The iftarr the local people bring to this mosque during the month of Ramadan is incredible. They have just purchased land next door to expand the mosque. Seperate entrance for ladies the lead to upstairs. Excellent facilites. They welcome all programs and groups and facilitate all sorts of khathams and speeches. If in the area, please check this place out. It's a warming experience. The brothers responsible for the cleaning of the mosque do a termendous job. May Allah reward them all.
