It honestly felt like a scam. This used to be my favourite Middle Eastern restaurant in downtown Halifax. Beautifully decorated with traditional lights, ornaments, and even floor seating tables that created an authentic atmosphere. What we walked into this time was completely different. The restaurant was empty during Iftar, which should have been a red flag. It was dark, grimy, and felt more like a run-down takeout spot than the vibrant Middle Eastern restaurant it once was. The server was dressed as if this were a fine-dining establishment, which only made the disconnect more bizarre. We ordered the Iftar special: lentil soup, sambosa, green salad, lamb shank mandi, and a Vimto. The “lentil soup” tasted nothing like the comforting Middle Eastern version. It was closer to an overly salted Indian daal, almost inedible from the amount of salt. The sambosa was cheese-only and just average. The lamb shank itself was cooked well, but it was served with plain white rice instead of the traditional yellow mandi rice they advertise. The salad dressing was overwhelmingly vinegary and so sour that we couldn’t eat it. The soup and sambosa arrived about 10 minutes after ordering, and the main course followed 20 minutes later. For $25.99 plus tax and tip, the quality and experience were unacceptable. I genuinely wonder if the original owners sold the restaurant and the new management kept the name to mislead loyal customers. It no longer feels or tastes like a Middle Eastern restaurant, and I am deeply disappointed. I will not be returning, nor will I be recommending it to anyone.
