Good Fish and Chips meal after a hot summer day visiting the Glow Worm Cave
Visiting glowworm caves has been a dream of mine since childhood. During our trip to Auckland, visiting Waitomo was an absolute must. We booked through Viator and it was roughly a 2.5 hour ride one way. We arrived as the ticketing center and was treated to a short documentary film on Waitomo's rich and fascinating history. While waiting for your group to be called, their café offers coffee, sweets, and plenty of seating to chill and snack. The tour begins with simple rules: no photos or videos except in permitted areas, and no touching of the rock formations. Strike one is a warning. Strike two and your will be escoted out of the tour. Our guide was a brilliant going lady who informed us about all the geological wonders. She even sang a proverb to show off the insane acoustics in one of the chambers. Once we adjusted to low-light, we were ushered to a boat and were silently pulled via rope system into a pitch black cave where glowworms soon light up the ceiling like a starry night sky. It was absolutely stunning. In the last chamber, photo and video were allowed, though it doesn't do them just. As we got deported the boat, we sat a wētā and fresh water eel which was super cool. Like all great tourist attractions, you exit through the giftshop. We had a blast and would reccomend this to anyone visiting the North Island!
