Only certain items on the menu are halal. The halal items are not marked on the to-go menu only on the sit-in menu. Not all the servers know so be sure to have them ask a manager. Basically most chicken dishes are halal. Service was good. Food was okay.

Last week we ordered a variety of dishes for carryout to the hospital. None disappointed. Meats were tender and succulent, sides were flavorful and well-sized, and desserts were delicious (the kids recommend the chocolate baklava!) Overall, we had a great experience that we intend to repeat by dining in soon. The ambience in the restaurant is contemporary and upscale, but the staff is authentic, friendly and exude a casual feel. They're knowledge and used to having kids there. The location in a strip mall is deceiving; if you can't find parking, find a spot on some local street to the south, and walk over, enjoying the traditional hyde park area.

Menus are now updated so there is a cursive H next to every item that is halal, which is anything chicken or lamb but not beef. Waiters might not be knowledgable about middleware

My wife loves this place, she claims it has the best hummus she's tasted in the area! She ordered the vegetarian platter (grape leaves, falafel, hummus, tabbouleh), and I had the lamb skewers. Although the prices are on the high end ($10 for the vegetarian platter!), it was a nice dining experience, as the restaurant is very clean and ornately decorated. The staff is also nice and helpful. Wish the whole menu was zabiha-halaal though, as the lamb is one of the only items that is.

Called to inquire about the meat they used at their restaurant. Response 5/24/2004 4:45 PM: "we used meat which is acceptable by both Jews and Muslims." This does not sound Zabiha to me.

"Wow! The new location is utterly beautiful! Historic Muslim / Middle Eastern style & decor surrounds you, yet Arabic letters that adorn the walls and the exhibition theater open-kitchen make you feel like you're in a contemporary American bistro setting. The taste of the food cannot be compared to other Middle Eastern restaurants -- in fact, not only has Cedars moved, but it change its name to Cedars Mediterranean Kitchen -- because the menu now includes new dishes. I also get their food all the time at UIC (SSR - CIU & CCC) for lunch. I agree with person above -- must see for everyone. "
