Barcelos opened its first store in Pretoria, South Africa in 1993. Using recipes mastered by the Portuguese hundreds of years ago, our flame grilled flavours became so popular that we franchised the business in 1998. Since then we have opened outlets in 16 countries including SA, Lesotho, Botswana, Zambia, Namibia, Mozambique, Ghana, Nigeria, Sudan, Canada, UK, Dubai, Oman, Mauritius, Singapore, and soon in Pakistan, India & Qatar.
Staff has given verbal assurance of halal status. Selected Barcelos locations are certified Halal by ICSA.
I have visited this Barcelos branch on two separate occasions, and unfortunately both experiences were negative. On my first visit, I ordered a quarter chicken. While eating it, I started feeling unwell halfway through the meal and was unable to finish it. I ended up throwing the chicken away due to how sick I felt afterward. Two months later, on Thursday, 11/12/2025, we decided to give Barcelos another chance because we have consistently had great experiences at the Gateway Barcelos branch and expected the same standards at the Engen Pavilion branch. Unfortunately, this was not the case. I ordered a full chicken meal with all the side dishes. The day after eating the chicken, I suffered from severe salmonella poisoning. This raises serious concerns about food safety and hygiene at this branch. Staff should be properly trained to identify when food is no longer safe to serve and to strictly adhere to food safety standards. For anyone reading this review, based on my personal experience, the Gateway Barcelos branch offers far better service and food quality and is the only Barcelos branch I would recommend.
