Islamic Centre of Oshawa

23 Lloyd Street, Oshawa, ON

Sunni (Traditional)

Nestled in the heart of downtown Oshawa, the Islamic Centre of Oshawa (ICO) is one of the oldest masjids in the province of Ontario. The ICO is a non-profit, registered charity that has been serving the Muslim community in and around the region since 1979. The ICO was established with the aim of providing a place of worship for the expanding Muslim community and to cater to the Islamic educational needs of all members of our society. Given its close proximity to the city centre, the ICO is heavily relied upon not only by residents of the city but also families traveling to and from Toronto, local businesses, and individuals working in the area. Regular services currently provided at the ICO include the five daily congregational prayers, the Friday Jumma sermon and prayer, Taraweeh prayers in Ramadhan, the two Eidain prayers and a variety of religious talks and programs held throughout the year.

The new masjid will be open in the spring of 2012 insha'allah. It will feature full facilities for women and handicapped persons. All programs will be held in english as well Insha'allah. As the building is newly built, all the facilities including the washrooms are top notch. Looking forward to it.

They are currently rebuilding this masjid. The previous masjid was small, and held in a old house. But the masjid overall is very welcoming.

The building houses the 'mosque' and a few rooms or apartments. The place is very traditional with the pre-khutba talk held in Urdu. I would tend to rate the place as 'average'. Being from a non-Urdu speaking background I did not feel particularly welcome. However, it is a 'house of Allah' and one of few places to pray Juma on the occasions I'm in Oshawa. In this society, any mosque is a good mosque. It is better for it to be there then not.
