Suleymaniye Mosque mosque in Hackney, Greater London

Suleymaniye Mosque

212 Kingsland Road, Hackney, Greater London

Sunni (Traditional)

The Suleymaniye Mosque is one of London's newest mosques, opened in the early-1990s, and built primarily with funding from the Turkish community. Due to its proximity to Old Street and the City, however, it is also far more mixed than the Azizia Mosque further up in Dalston. The quasi-Ottoman architecture both inside and outside combines the modern down-toning of its exterior with the traditional Iznik tilework around the mihrab. The mosque also has a good function hall, has its own on-site school, and a popular canteen. Prince Charles paid a visit in 2002 to show support for Muslims after the September 11th attacks.
