Muslim Cultural Heritage Centre

244 Acklam Road, Kensington, Greater London

Sunni (Traditional)

Opened in 2001 with Prince Charles attending, this mosque was purpose built to a high architectural standard on a vacant lot in Westbourne Park. The mosque quickly outgrew its capacity and the outdoor courtyard was made into an internal atrium with naturally ventilating wind towers. Women's facilities are separate but in an open faced upper storey with direct views of the imam behind post-modern partial height wooden screens. The mosque provides a comprehensive array of services including kitchens and childcare and is easily accessible by tube (Westbourne Park station). The constitution stipulates that appointed trustees mirror the multicultural array of Muslims in the area, with no more than three allowed from any one ethnic group.
