Lawrence restaurants have expanded halal offerings and adjusted menus to welcome Algerian visitors during the 2026 World Cup, according to reporting by KCUR. Several establishments pulled pork dishes or introduced new halal-friendly options.
At Lebanese Flower Cafe, which opened in October 2025, staff highlighted Algerian dishes like chicken tagine throughout the tournament. "We are halal, so we're finding that the Middle Eastern clientele are able to come here and enjoy the ambiance, their friends, their family, the games in an alcohol-free environment," said Nouhad Captan, who has worked at the cafe since it opened.
Mass Street Fish House removed nearly all pork from its menu and offered a special dish of whole fish with couscous and harissa. Owner Laura Klein said the restaurant aimed "to stay really true to our concept and true to ourselves, but also incorporate some things that might make visitors feel really comfortable." Klein, president of the Lawrence Restaurant Association, said the goal was "to embody radical hospitality."
Other venues joined the effort. Red Lyon Tavern, described as the premier soccer bar in Lawrence, traded alcoholic beverages for Algerian sodas, teas, and coffees during the Algeria-Jordan game on June 23. The Lawrence Farmer's Market offered recipe cards for traditional Algerian dishes using local produce.
The adjustments also highlighted Lawrence's existing Middle Eastern restaurants, including Aladdin Cafe, The Fresh Mediterranean Co., Shawarma Press, and Mediterranean Market & Cafe, according to Kansas Reflector. A University of Kansas representative advised restaurant owners to make smaller menu tweaks rather than dramatic changes.
