Tom's Barbecue & Deli |
|
4087 New Getwell Road, Memphis, TN 38118
Traditional Memphis-style barbecue with halal entrees. While they do serve pork and non-halal food, the Muslim owner has instructed his staff to have available a selection of halal entrees. They have halal food ready at all times, and kitchen employees are instructed to use different gloves, knives, and storage areas for handling of halal food, which is available at all times. ★★★★★ We visited Tom's bbq yesterday while on our roadtrip to Memphis, and am so glad we did! The owner gave us his salaams right as we walked through the door and was incredibly hospitable. We ordered the beef ribs and the brisket sandwich -- and they were delicious! We had cole slaw and baked beans on the side. The zabihah meat is prepared in a separate area with separate tools from the nonhalal meat. This place is so good, I read reviews that it is one of the top BBQ spots in Memphis! And there are zabihah options! How often do we get that lucky? The owner is very involved in the community (he was preparing to cater an interfaith lunch for the next day). He was so nice-- he let us sit in the dining room despite us showing up almost at closing, as well as gave us a free strawberry shortcake dessert! Jazaks, brother! Posted on March 3, 2013 |

★★★★★ It's so nice to see the family working alongside the staff, as well as hijab wearing customers. We were greeted with salaam and enjoyed a variety of delicious halal options: beef brisket, whole turkey leg, beef ribs, grilled chicken, and burgers. Will definitely go every time we're in the area Posted on January 3, 2022 |

I met with the Owner of Tom's Barbecue & Deli in Memphis, TN.
He was born in Palestine. Very nice gentleman. Posted on March 20, 2020 |

★★★★★ The first, and for a long time the only, place in the US where you can have American Bar B Que. Living in Orlando we do not have the convenience to taste their food every day but we try to adjust our road trip itineraries to swing by this place whenever we can. One such visit happened late last December and as always the wonderful food was only bested by brother Adam's hospitality. Posted on January 25, 2018 |

★★★★★ What can I say. It's a renowned down home country as authentic as it gets Memphis BBQ restaurant. They have their own smokers and BBQ pits, were featured on triple D (diners, drive-ins and dives) with Guy Fieri. I've always wanted to have authentic southern style BBQ but never had the opportunity to find halal. The chicken and beef are halal and cooked on completely different equipment. It's everything you could ever hope for if you've ever watched those BBQ shows on TV and fantasized about being able to eat any of it. The brisket was excellent, the ribs were phenomenal. I drove almost 300 miles to check this place out and I cannot say enough good things. The owner Adam even invited me to pray in a private corner and the service was excellent. They were very accommodating and when I went to pray, put my to go box in the heater and gave me a new soda on the way out. Alhamdulillah I hope this place continues to be very successful. NR After reading all the good reviews I felt like eating here, but I turned around at the door because I just thought that I won't trust a Muslim who sells pork or alcohol. Please 'zabihah.com' remove these listings from your website. Posted on March 30, 2016 |
We've clearly labeled this restaurant as serving pork/alcohol alongside halal options so that people who don't feel comfortable can avoid it. There are many Muslims who are OK with this restaurant's accommodations for Muslim customers, so we leave the listing up for their benefit. |

★★★★☆ One word: Barbecueinducedcoma. First, the food here is very good. I had a brisket sandwich and the catfish platter. Ahhhhh! Second, there is pork served here, but the employees make a genuine effort to keep the halal separate. I met the owner, not only he gave me salams first, but also made sure I order the halal dish. My two cents: most pizza and other restaurants serve pork. I wonder if they make an effort to keep your food halal. By the way, this is not a justification for Muslims to sale pork, alcohol or interest based products. Just thinking... Posted on October 31, 2015 |

★☆☆☆☆ I dont agree with the reviews from above. We got a beef brisket sandwich and a rack of beef ribs. The sandwich was ok but nothing to rave about. The ribs were probably 3-4 days old and just reheated. They were not completely heated so there was still dry oil on it. We only tasted the ribs and were sorely dissapointed. I am also bothered by the fact that it is a halal place but yet their main items are all PORK Posted on October 19, 2012 |

★★★★★ i had never had BBQ in my life, this is the best place to come and eat Halal BBQ. the Brother who owns this place is a great human being and doing a very good job for the community.
The food is outstanding ! the chicken falls off the bone ! the brisket is out of this world and even the beef burger is very good !
You have to tell them at the counter that you want food from the Halal Menu and they announce- brisket/chicken quarter halal and announce change of gloves ! This has left me very impressed indeed. May the brother's business do well inshallah. Posted on April 23, 2012 |

★★★★★ I just heard about Tom's BBQ recently from this website and went there today with my family. I can say it was delicious, tasty and mouth watering (melts in your in mouth!!!)
I spoke to a Muslim brother, who worked there, and he assured me all the food was Halal (except the pork...obviously!).
Great service and food. Looks like I've found a great little place to have some fine Southern food. Posted on January 28, 2012 |

★★★★★ Of all of the famous barbecue places in Memphis, this is the only one that serves authentic Memphis halal barbecue.
First, it's important to realize that they do serve pork and non-halal food, and have been doing so for years. The owner, however, is Muslim, and he has halal entrees stored separately. They have halal food ready at all times, and kitchen employees are instructed to use different gloves, knives, and storage areas for handling of halal food. Whether that is enough varies from person to person, but I am just relaying the facts.
One problem is that this place is out of the way, prob a 15-20 min drive from anyone in Memphis. However, once you get past all of that, the food is truly very good. His bbq ribs are more tender than anything else you will try, and his smoked wings and chicken quarters are also very good. Beef brisket is not bad either, and the spicy habanero sauce adds an extra kick into all of the dishes. The strawberry shortcake dessert is also great.
For anyone visiting Memphis who has no problem with these qualifiers, this is a great place to have halal southern barbecue. Posted on June 28, 2011 |
