41068 Fremont Blvd, Fremont, CA 94538
Pakwan first opened its doors in 1999 when two partners, Khalid and Shabaz, decided it was time to turn their dream into reality. Their vision of an authentic and traditional Bay Area Indian restaurant planted its roots in San Francisco, where Pakwan quickly became an acclaimed favorite amongst families, businesses and tourists. Due to its successful beginning as a recognized Bay Area Indian Restaurant, Pakwan established a new location in Fremont. Today, Pakwan, the Bay Area Indian restaurant, is a favorite Indian dining destination, at any of its four locations. Added on June 27, 2004 and last updated 6 years ago

★★★★☆ Love love their biryani, any curry they serve and kabab and naan and chai, only issue they ask for cash only, which cause some inconvenience Posted on September 28, 2015 |

★★★★★ Excellent Chicken Tikka. This place has become very well organized, and neat and clean. Has become a regular place for my family. Highly recommended. Posted on April 14, 2015 |

★★☆☆☆ It's a busy place, so service can be slow. The dishes such as the plates, spoons, and forks were not cleaned properly, which was a huge turn-off. The chicken tikka was the best thing they had in terms of food. Posted on December 16, 2012 |

★★★★☆ Located close to Irvington Masjid in Fremont. Tandoori chicken, seekh kabab and naan are great. I recommend. Posted on July 12, 2012 |

NR For 2nd time in the last three months I got bitterly sick after eating at Pakwan in Fremont. Both times I had the nihari and chicken korma. Posted on June 11, 2012 |

★★★★★ This does have few ratings here.....much less than yelp... definitely the best place to have indian/pakistani food in the east bay.. cheap and quality food...its def worth recommending... Posted on March 7, 2012 |

★★★★☆ Stopped in here for lunch today. Has the chicken biryani and a mango lassi. It was very flavorful and spicy. They gave me a free plain raita (yogurt) which was good. The mango lassi was decent (made from a mix). Prices are reasonable. Interior of this place has been renovated and looks nice. I also like the organized way they show your number on the screen and also have an automated voice system which says your number is ready as well. Complimentary chai is great. Only complaint is that the biryani did not have any Aloo (potato) in it! Very hard to find a place that does that! Posted on July 27, 2011 |

NR The food is amazing. The chicken tikka is the best, and the lamb chops are some of the best I've had. Now, the lamb chops are a risk - sometimes they've done a marvelous job, other times it's been ok.
The kabobs are great, as is the bread...good ambience, gets packed on weekends.
Key things to remember - it's all self service. Have to get your own plates, utensils, drinks, water and even food. Which isn't a bad thing - the food more than makes up for this inconvenience.
And - it's somewhat greasier than some of the other pakistani establishments. If you don't mind the grease and subsequent heartburn, it's the best, if not one of the best Pakistani restaurants in the Bay Area Posted on May 5, 2011 |

★★★★★ I read some of the older reviews and they seem inaccurate and/or out of date. This location has been remodeled recently, and part of that is that they've installed a PA system and a couple of large LCD displays to showcase dishes and display current orders that are ready. It adds a bit of order to the process (as prior to this getting your food here was a bit chaotic).
I would also mention for first-timers that the place is mostly self-service: you seat yourself, get your own menus, order your food at the register, get your own jug of water, get your own plates, glasses and cutlery.
But it's well worth it.
The food here is very, very good. In particular the chicken tikka (with bone) is phenomenal. I'm really giving them a 5 almost exclusively for this dish. Get it with some garlic naan, and you will never want chicken tikka from anywhere else - juicy, succulent, with a slight smoky flavor and charred at the edges. It really is a delightful dish.
There are a couple of other dishes I would say are also very good - the beef seekh kabab as well as the Bihari kabab.
I've also had their curries and biryani, and while they are certainly good, and even remind me of good ol' homemade Punjabi cooking, I can say that I have better versions of these dishes elsewhere. That isn't to say they aren't good - just that this is not why you should come here. Come prepared to eat the tikka and maybe order a curry on the side.
Another small but nice touch: they put the chutneys (red and green) - which by the way are also quite good - in old school diner style ketchup bottles!
Lastly, they have unlimited free chai, which is a great way to start or end (or both!) a meal here.
Bon appetit! Posted on January 2, 2011 |

★★★☆☆ Over all experience was ok. Posted on December 31, 2009 |

★☆☆☆☆ The food is very oily and greasy. The owners need a basic lesson in customer service and politeness. Fruit flies were roaming around the dining room. I find the place very unhealthy and will not go back there again. Posted on October 8, 2008 |

★☆☆☆☆ Very good food, small but clean, good attitude. How many indo-pak places have the courage to have an open kitchen ? 'nuff said...definitely a BIG improvement over their Hayward place. Fast becoming a regular there.
July 2008 update: Gone completely downhill! Half-cooked tandoor chicken (salmonella just waiting to happen), watered down curries -- simply terrible. A far cry from when they first opened. Posted on August 12, 2008 |

★★★★★ This Pakwan is far better than the one in Hayward. The food is delicious and service is great! I would definitely go there again. But I would not recommend the one in Hayward. Thanks Posted on December 5, 2006 |

★★★★☆ Great food, excellent Chicken Biryani (nice and spicy!), and nice hot naan! A little slow in the kitchen, and they seem to "run out" of the specials, even if you get there about 11am when they open. BTW, its cash only - no credit cards, so remind your non-desi friends. ★★★★☆ A nice alternative to the crowded Shalimar. Good food but they need to be more consistent. The chicken tikka alone is worth a trip to the restaurant. Prices are reasonable Posted on December 14, 2005 |

★★★★★ Very good place. Beats Shalimar any day with good food, better prices & excellent SERVICE. Manager is also courteous & not full of himself. Would definitely go there again & again. Posted on September 27, 2004 |

★★★☆☆ Ok, food quality definitely not the same as the one on Clay in SF or even the one at Hayward. Posted on August 6, 2004 |

★★★★☆ Pakwan rocks! I'm a regular at the Mission St. Pakwan and I love the food there. For the Fremont branch, I was a bit disappointed that the Chicken Makhanwala didn't quite taste the same as that served at the other branches I've been to ( Mission & 16th branch). It seemed to lack body in the taste of the sauce. I'm sure they'll get it right soon. Til then, I'll continue my Pakwan dining at the Mission branch (even though I live 10 minutes from the Fremont branch). Posted on July 22, 2004 |
