Staff has given verbal assurance of halal status. From the management: 'Mamouns is committed to serving quality food using quality ingredients. As part of that commitment, all the meat we serve is certified halal. This means that the meat does not contain any pork or pork product (including gelatin and shortenings) and that the animal has not been treated with any antibiotics or growth hormones and has been fed a natural diet that does not contain any animal by-products. Simply stated, when eating halal meat, you know exactly what you're getting: fresh quality meat without any additives or preservatives.'
Mamoun's has been serving high quality Middle Eastern Food since it first opened its doors to the public in 1971. It is the oldest falafel restaurant in New York and one of the first Middle Eastern establishments in the United States. What sets us apart from other Falafel restaurants is our rich tradition and history as well as our commitment to excellence. Our philosophy is simple: authentic Middle Eastern Cuisine served in a traditional environment. Everything we serve is made from scratch using only the freshest natural ingredients, the finest imported spices, and our signature recipes.

When I arrived there I had doubt and I asked the staff there if the meats are zabihah halal. He clearly mentioned meats are not zabihah halal but they have vegetarian options. This listing should be removed from the list.
This is a hole-in-the-wall take-out halal Middle Eastern restaurant serving falafel, shawarma, kabobs, lentil soup, and more. There\'s no room to sit. The restaurant is located in the tight quarters of Greenwich Village, so you should probably leave the Chrysler Turbine Car at home. The falafel ($2 for 3 pieces) is above average though not exceptional. The chicken shwarma plate ($12) is excellent, though best eaten hot. Overall, an excellent place for take-out and open late until 5am.
Love everything especially the chicken shwarma and falafel!.. not really a place to sit and enjoy so we usually go to Washington Sq. Park nearby..
Very good chicken shawarma! Not the kind of place you really sit in; there's basically no room. Expect to wait in line for a while as well. Prices are decent though, so it's worth it if you've never been here before.
Food was very good
Great chicken shwarma but lamb was too fatty and not very appetizing.
Falafel here is very good and cheap. As a student, this was a pretty important place for me. A landmark in the city, deservedly so.
love eating here so good. The food always taste great.
The original Mamoun's location, and first falafel restaurant in NYC. Mamoun's has been featured in the book "1000 Places To See Before You Die." The falalfel is amazing and the lamb shawarma is delicious. Check out our full review with pictures here.
I dont know about the people who are saying it is not Halal but my friend and I asked the guy at the counter if everything is Halal and he siad Yes. Thats verbal assurance from the person behind the counter, he could have said no and i would have bought the falafel and no meat, but he knew what halal meant and he said yes. BTW, the food is amazing for the price. although the price of the meat sandwiches have gone up to $5. the Falafel is still at $2.50, up from $2 back in the days.
great falalfels! I go here very often, very crowded, so be ready to stand in line.
great falafels, and they cut up the falafel rounds so that your not trying to ingest a 2X2X2 round all at once. Other than that, it seems the meat is not halal. I had asked the place across the street if they (Ali Baba Falafel) were halal and they man said no one in this district (including Mamoun's) can afford to carry halal meat so if someone is tellin you they are halal, they're not. At least he was honest. Sorry folks, no shwarma. But the falafels are pretty good, only $2/each! & good bakhlava
Very cheap falafel sandwiches. Absolutely delicious. Not too many table to sit and eat at.
Great food for very cheap prices. Place is opened late. We went there around midnight and our food was served within seconds. Not really any room to eat inside so I'd recommend this place for a quick bite on the go and a definite must for anyone on a student budget.
Great food at very cheap prices.
have eaten here once but its very popular with NYU students. the food is really inexpensive but filling and well done.
