This masjid is very close to Oakland Zoo. Very nice and clean masjid. It is not in the best neighborhood but place was opened for Asr.
I was in the area around Zuhr time on a weekday. I found the address online, however, when my GPS got me there, I had missed the prayers. No one appeared to be there, but then a young brother showed up for prayers and opened the door. This is a humble masjid, but has everything that a Muslim or Muslimah needs to do wadu. I felt peaceful in this masjid. I cannot explain it. I just felt (Allah-ho-alim) that the people who put up this masjid and the people who attend it are sincere. I have been to some beautiful, expensive masjids in the Bay Area. This one is far from elaborate, but it has just some indescribable feel to it. If you are ever in the area, please consider visiting. I wish this masjid had a website.
I tried to come this masjid yesterday since I was in the neighborhood for work and it appeared closed. The main side facing MacArthur has no windows whatsoever and there is a single door which was closed. I didn't see a back entrance and ended up leaving. Zabihah says it's open for the 5 daily prayers so not sure if it's like other mosques where they are closed immediately after the prayers (I was in the neighborhood a little before 1pm to catch Zuhr). I ended up going to Hayward for a masjid.
I started going to this masjid in the 90's. It is a decent sized masjid in the heart of East Oakland on Macarthur Blvd. I have been there for Jummah a few times. This community is really active as they do lots of activities and offer various services for the community.
A small masjid in a poor area of East Oakland. But the Muslims here are really dedicated to Islam and do alot with the few resources they have. They organize feed the needy days in the neighborhood and have alot of respect from their non-Muslim neighbors. There is also no barrier in the prayer hall for the women, which I like. I encouage all Muslims to come and visit Masjid Al-Islam for Jummah or on a weekend and check it out.
