★★★☆☆ Assalam u Alaikum Brothers/Sisters. I always want to give a quick background of the eating scenario. I have a family of 4, who eat like we are of 8. We are from Lahore, Pakistan and review restaurants honestly and sincerely with Allah in mind. We were spending the day looking at the UTSC campus and by the end of the day, we'd been through much of the city and wanted to grab something to eat. Being that we drove 2 hours to get to Scarborough, we already knew we were headed to a place known for being densely-populated with Muslims and halal restaurants. (this was a delight in our eyes considering our current city is nothing like it) We decided that a Chinese place would be the most different for us, and so we went there. (plus, we've never been to a halal Chinese restaurant) We prayed at the Abu Bakr Masjid and drove to Chopsticks Scezhuan which was a few miles outside of the busiest Lawrence area. There was no halal sign listed anywhere, but we did know it was 'Chinese-Indian' cuisine so we went in to ask for the menu, confirmed it was halal and sat down. The restaurant is rather small, but definitely larger than most restaurants that Zabihah reviewers list as 'small'. It could easily fit 30 dinners across its long center tables and 4-people side tables. We generally like booths just as a privacy comfort, but since everything in the restaurant was exposed, we just chose the table opposite to the storefront. Regardless, we had the pleasure of our server be the owner, who was an older seemingly-Chinese woman. While taking our order, she started speaking Hindi which was surprising to us. She told us she grew up in Bombay as well as her two daughters but they moved here and thus got the Chinese-Indian take on the place. She was a very nice person and she looked like she knew the other customers in the store as regular customers. We ordered Kung Pao Beef, Chili Chicken, Sweet and Sour Chicken, Chow Mein Noodles, and Chicken Manchurian - all requested to be spicy. We still couldn't get a real answer from the owner, but it seemed like our cutlery wasn't washed properly. We told the owner after taking our order and she said it's her responsibility to make sure things are clean and apologized, but then also said the cutlery is old so the texture we felt on them was just the design of the spoon, and ultimately we just felt confused as to what she was trying to say. (she gave us washed ones afterwards) We received the food on rather-small platters in about 20 minutes. We also got a rather small bowl of rice, which we thought would be too less for the amount of food. After 15 minutes or so, we were all decently-full but not satisfied. The food is spiced not with cayenne pepper, but with actual vinegared chilis which made the food most taste like heat. The Kung Pao Beef was good because of the more mild taste with peanuts, the Chow Mein Noodles were standard but still spicy, the Manuchurian was mildest dish on the table, the Chili Chicken was the most spicy but tastier of the dishes, and the Sweet and Sour Chicken was overly-sweet with no taste of anything tangy or sour and deeply-red in color. After the meal, we all agreed on two things: all the chicken was stir-fried earlier in the day was reheated for each of the sauces the dishes called for, and if given the opportunity to return to Scarborough, we would opt to eat somewhere else. To be honest, we were hoping for a much more tasteful and exciting experience than that which we received at Chopsticks Szechuan. In our opinions, it was the definition of an average Chinese restaurant: reheated food, sauces dominate each dish, and cheaper in total. Regardless, we are always thankful after every meal, Alhumdulillah. We'll always regard this restaurant as our first halal Chinese experience. JazakAllah Khair. Posted on December 31, 2015 |

★☆☆☆☆ The food was horrible. The chicken had a leftover taste, and the sauces were just ordinary store-bought, which wasn't even hot enough when it arrived. Even the tap water tasted bad, because it must have been put in the fridge which absorbed the flavour of whatever else was in there. After the meal, I arrived home to chow down on some Gravol, because I was feeling so nauseous. I would never recommend this place, nor would I ever return. Posted on January 10, 2015 |

★★☆☆☆ This place is NOT HALAL. Fellow Muslims this place has no certification from any halal authority. They don't server alcohol, but that does not justify halal status. They DO NOT display receipt of meat purchase. SO BEWARE. If they can't be honest with me I will go there again. I know just down the street on Lawrence Hakka Masala has HMA certification and displays meat purchase receipt on front desk. Posted on November 17, 2013 |

★★★★☆ Good halal chinese hakka food, very friendly service. One of the few hakka food places that dont serve alcohol. Posted on June 2, 2011 |

★★★★★ Love their shanghai shrimp and veg manchurian noodles (the red ones). I do avoid eating meat at this place since there has been so much controversy. The owner actually asked me if that is the reason why we stopped visiting the restaurant (as we used to be regular customers). She did assure us that everything is halal. Posted on March 23, 2011 |

★★★★☆ The food is a bit better than the average. It's not bland like Fredericks at Markham and Ellesmere. Good portions. They have the same dishes at most chinese restaurants, BUT here, the dishes are $2.00 more on average. Posted on February 13, 2011 |

★☆☆☆☆ NOT LIKE BEFORE. Chilli Chicken was too salty. Family run business. Lady there alwasy tries to cut corner and save a dime. Its was way too dark I asked her to turn lights on she said "o no we don't turn lights on..we usually have spotlights but is not working today". Chilli Chicken comes with rice I know from past she told us if people don't ask for steam rice i do not give them. When I complain about too much soya sause in chicken she kept saying no no thats they way its been made...as if I have never had chilli chicken before. I had to tell her take this back and give me another one...she bought another chicken chilli but my mother noticed SHE JUST WASH THE CHICKEN THAT HAD TOO MUCH SOYA SAUSE AND SERVED IT AGAIN. DISGUSTING WILL NEVER GO BACK. Posted on September 26, 2010 |

★★★☆☆ Sometimes good, sometimes bad. Pretty inconsistent from my experience. It would be great if someone can clear up the zabihah halal meat question next time they visit. Not serving alhocol is a Thumbs Up. Posted on August 9, 2010 |

★★★★★ Just tried it today, took 2 single person combos as take out. I took one from their Indian and one from their Chinese menu. Both taste fantastic. Even better than Chun Moi in some regards.
I checked the meat myself, there is no trace of blood. It is cut in the halal manner (no effects of strangulation visible). Furthermore, this establishment refuses to serve alcohol (another indicator).
I would recommend the combo with the chicken with almonds with hot & sour. It is completely up to standards. Posted on August 8, 2010 |

★☆☆☆☆ Food is wayyy too spicy even for a desi guy. Not going again. Posted on October 4, 2009 |

★★★★★ Hmmm, I go there cause I thought it was halaal. But I'll check next time as the previous person recommended.
They have the best chinese food, but they're a bit pricey. Posted on January 26, 2009 |

★☆☆☆☆ The meat (chicken & beef) is not Halaal. This is confirmed by myself and another sister. I requested the lady at the cashier (the chinese looking one thats always there) to tell me where she gets the meat from. She replied, "Sargent Farms", and she was nice enough to give me their number too. I asked, "is this your only meat supplier?". She replied "Yes, we only get our meat from them". So I called Sargent Farms @ (416)798-0684 and spoke to Steve (Sales & Accounts Manager). His reply, "We use to supply to Chopsticks Szechuan last year, and since then we have NOT been their meat supplier." I said, "But they are claiming they are getting their meat from Sargent Farms". Steve from Sargent Farms said, "I've confirmed on our end that we are not their supplier, they are getting the meat from someone else".
So, our conclusion to this: If the owners are not muslim, then why would they give a damn to supply halal meat? and surely, they do not give a damn as we have confirmed that their meat is not halaal. I'm not telling anyone to believe me, which is why I REQUEST you to Call Chopsticks and follow the same procedure I did, and you will get the answer yourself. Posted on August 1, 2007 |

★★★★★ They have lovely chicken lollipop and chicken pakora, the best I've ever tasted in my life. They also have amazing sizzlers.. try chicken or prawn sizzlers. Delicious chilly chicken and chicken fried rice. Portions are good too, enough for two people. Small place, low lighting, apparently visited by a lot of TV/Movie stars. We met one too. When I went in December 2006, I wasnt sure if I will go again, but needless to say they have improved the standard and quality of their food and the owner is very friendly. MUST TRY !!!!! ★★★★☆ I'm literally in love with this place. The food here is simply amazing. I've forsaken all the other chinese restaurants for this one. This place comes closest to offering the desi style chinese food with the right amount of spices n all. Posted on January 14, 2006 |

★☆☆☆☆ they do not sell halal meat. When asked to produce receipts for halal meat purchases, they were unable to. On 2 occasions, i've seen a non-halal truck pulling out of the driveway. When I asked the storekeeper, she said, we sell both types of meat. Which means, cross contamination occurs all the time. Please avoid. Posted on December 12, 2005 |

★★★★☆ Assalamo alaykum, I came back here after a long time and I must say the food and service were both good. Posted on August 12, 2005 |

★★★★☆ Excellent food... small portions though. The crispy beef and chicken is worth the trip. They do not serve alcohol... and the owner helps you decide what to order from the menu... describing the dishes and all. It came to about $20/person... I believe they increased their prices this year. Posted on January 24, 2005 |

★★★★★ Excellent food. Just curious about the cross that hangs over the exit door. Apart from that, was the best chinese food I have had in Toronto. Especially the Manchurian Chow Mein and the Sweet and Spicy Chicken. Next time before going, I will call and ask them about the cross. Posted on November 20, 2004 |

★★★★★ Assalamualaikum,
The owner of this restaurant resides in my neighbourhood, and having spoken to her I can verify that her meat is HALAL. T&R Sargent Farms LTD is the only place she gets her poultry (hand slaughtered) and she gets her beef from spicetown in scarborough. Although the vigilant pursuit of halal food is admirable one should be careful as to not slander an owner with accusations based on assumptions. This lady refuses to sell alcohol in her restaurant as a respect to her Muslim customers - the allegations made in this post is no way to reciprocate her good will.......eating halal food is one thing eating the flesh of your brethren (backbiting) is quite another! ★★★★★ Hello everyone,
I have verified about their halal food status and asked the owner for the invoice. She has shown me her weekly invoices, they do change the supplier for the halal meat frequently but they do very much serve and have served halal food from the very first day. I have been going there with my family for a couple of years too but for all your satisfaction, i have the number of the supplier from whom they get the meat. Anyone that has doubts could call: T&R Sargent Farms LTD. (416)798-0684. Posted on April 21, 2004 |

★☆☆☆☆ Brithers and Sisters sorry to disappoint you. This place does not sell halal. They just tell thier clients that the food is halal. When I challanged them and asked them to provide Invoices to confirm that the Halal Status they refused. Posted on February 29, 2004 |

Can someone find out the truth, because I've gone there quite a few times. Thanx!" Posted on September 23, 2002 |

★★★☆☆ Assalamo Alaikum. I have doubts about the meat served at this place. I called'em up and asked for their Halal meat distributor. They gave me some cell # where no one ever picks up. Please do contact'em and try to get in-touch with their Halal meat guy. Posted on September 23, 2002 |
