★★★★☆ Nice afghani decor, and they have floor seating. The food was delicious, we ordered chicken kabob, beef kubideh, and chapli kabob with rice. All items were delicious, also love their green and red sauces, both sauces have distinct flavor and good amount of spice. Posted on April 29, 2015 |
|
|
★★★★☆ We veer towards the tried and tested - Bolani, Chapli Kabab and Chicken Kabab
with the Chapli being the best succulent and crispy is a texture to die for.
The Aushak -a stuffed ravioli with beef and a yogurt sauce, the Korma Challow with tender lamb in a tomato sauce and Mantoo which is yet more beef with a yogurt sauce have been so memorable we've made multiple visits to recapture that flavor and never leave disappointed.
more here: An Aushak to remember Posted on April 6, 2014 |

★★★★☆ Had afghan food for the first time and I loved it. Food here is good. The Salad and naan were Delicious. The place is clean and ambiance ok , like a typical halal restaurant in Fremont . Went over a long weekend and the service was extremely slow. We had to wait a long time to order food however it came pretty quick . The host wasn't too welcoming either. Minus 1 star for the service , 4 stars for the great food. Posted on September 4, 2012 |

★★★★★ Our family loves this place. The food is really good and everyone gets a kick out of sitting on the floor and reclining on cushions to eat. If you have a big family make sure you have reservations. Posted on September 25, 2011 |

★★★★★ This is my favorite place. I come to this place very often. owner and servers are very friendly.
there kabobs are awesome. bolani is the best appetizer. Kabouli palow with lamb is the best.
recently re-modeled and added more seating. Posted on July 4, 2011 |

★★★★☆ The ambience to this place is great - they have floor seating which is very unique and adds to the experience. The decor is very Afghani as well. Between the decor and the floor seating, the experience is very interesting.
However, the food itself I find ok at best, and somewhat over priced. The taste isn't anything special, it could be any afghani restaurant - their taste has no differentiation from the multitude of other places, and isn't worth the price itself.
However, if you want a different experience, and would like to enjoy the ambience, the experience it is worth it. It's a great place to take out of towners.. Posted on May 5, 2011 |

★★★★★ Love the place. Any time I'm indecisive about what I'd like to eat, I find myself here, because the place never disappoints. My personal favorites: Chapli kabob, quabili polow. Highly recommended. Posted on September 24, 2010 |

★★★★☆ The few times we ate there, there was not too many people there, so the service was good. The family loved the food as well. The kabab was great and so was the aushak. They lose a star for serving alcohol. Posted on May 17, 2010 |

★★★★☆ This is the best food I have ever eaten hands down! It is fresh, and very tasty, the service is excellent and the atmosphere is very laid back and relaxing, I go here often with my family. We love it! Posted on November 20, 2009 |

★★★★★ Eat here everytime I'm on the West coast. The chapli kabobs are phenomenal. I had a great experience there each time. Posted on October 15, 2009 |

★★★☆☆ Setting is nice and food is great, but service is really bad......On multiple occasions they have messed up our orders and not even had the decency to apologize (or even partially) compensate for the screw up. They even try to avoid having to fix your order even if it is incorrect. Waiters have to asked multiple time for things (even for water and napkins !!)......If the customer service would improve I would be willing to go back, as I like the food and atmosphere. ★★★★★ Salang Pass is one of my favourite restaurants to eat. Although I really like two items here, I crave to eat at this Restaurant all the time. The best dishes are: Chapli Kabob and Bolani (appetizer). You would really love Chapli Kabobs here...guaranteed and Bolani as well. The key is that when ordering Chapli you need to tell them to make them crispy by cooking on low heat. You can eat Chapli with Afghani Naan or the rice which come along. There is a pasta like appetizer which is good too. Where they need improvement is their Chiken, lamb and beef kabobs. They hv a long way to go there.
Guys do go there and eat Chaplis, I am saying agian because I have taken many of my friends (various creeds and colors) and all of them enjoyed Chapli and Bolani! Posted on September 18, 2008 |

★★★★★ Really I don't need to elaborate on so many great reviews about this restaurant. I just wish that there were a similar Afghan restaurant in Orange County.
Don't forget to try their Afghan icecream, it is quiet good. Posted on November 28, 2007 |

★★★★★ I am a big fan of afghan/meditterranean/turkish food, and up until now I had to spend big bucks at Afghan Village to enjoy some good Afghan food. Times have changed though, and I feel like this restaurant is surpassing Afghan village in food quality, decor, prices, and the overall experience! I am in love with the tent seating area, it makes the meals taste so homey. And the food is EXCELLENT! The quantity is great for how much we are paying. I highly recommend this place for anyone craving a good chapli kebob in a cozy environment. Posted on October 17, 2007 |

★★★★☆ This restaurant is the best Afghan restaurant in Fremont. It seems the owners have changed -- so the service is understandably a little better (previous owner was not known for friendly customer service). try the Bolani (spicy) and the combo platter with Challow and Chapli. Courteous and professional service. Posted on April 10, 2007 |

★★★★☆ The ownership has recently changed, but the food quality is still high and very good. This place has a nice ambience and we usually bring our out of town guests here, as you can sit on the floor with cushions. The mantoo is nice and I usually get the chicken kabob and beef kabab combination plate. The chapli kabab is pretty good too. They usually have slow service, so that is the major drawback. Also they allow people (white, non-Muslims) to bring in alcohol and even provide the wine glasses for them! The previous owner use to do this as well, so I guess it hasnt changed that much. Posted on November 6, 2006 |

★★★☆☆ We recently ate there and think the restaurant ownership has changed, the food tastes different, not the old salang pass that i have been going to for over 8 years. Posted on October 4, 2006 |

★★★★☆ Good food... crave their mantoo every so often. Very good overall experience every time. Posted on February 20, 2006 |

|
★★★☆☆ The restuarnt has very unique seating a choice between sitting on the floor under a tent or regular chair and tables. I ordered the munto it is more restaurant quality than homestyle taste it came with bread and salad. Appetiezers range from $4.00 to $6.00 with $11.00 and above for main dishes. Posted on February 13, 2006 |

★★★☆☆ I have eaten here 3 times. The service is variable- sometimes good, sometimes extremely slow. The food overall is not bad- although the lamb I ordered last time was charred and not tender. Posted on January 6, 2006 |

★★★★★ Desi2005, you should learn to tell the truth. Salang does not have table cloths and you know that you came on this messageboard out of jealousy and hatred. Please learn to be nice and not spread rumors. Salang is a wonderful restaurant and please people, leave the politics out. This is not the middle east and we are hear to praise a restaurant that has continuously been rated as one of the top 100 restaurants in San Francisco Magazine. Great service, food and ambience. Shame on you that spread lies and rumors. Posted on November 3, 2005 |

★☆☆☆☆ Nice food but the attitude is really bad last when i went there afterr waiting for almost 30-40 minutes they serve with an excuse that they are out of chapli kabob and there kitchen is closed. The table cloth smells so bad and when i said to the hostess to change it she said its washed and 15 minutes later she changed it. Becarefull while paying the bill most of the time they charge you more than they served. On top of all this they charge you for 15% service charges if you are 6 or more than 6 people by them self. Last month was my last time i went to this place. Posted on September 8, 2005 |

★★★★☆ I think salang has the best Afghani food in the area and thats what we care about not about anyones countries or politics. Atleast while eating forget political issues!! Posted on January 28, 2005 |

★★★★★ I love this restaurant. I don't think I've ever had Afghan food this great in my life. It is tasty, delicous, flavorful, and very thougtfully prepared, with the most creative ingredients. I love the floor seating, so cozy. And the owner, Mr. Andesha, is so funny and courteous. If it wasn't for his company, I don't think I would want to step foot in there (well lying just a little, the food is GOOOD lol) anyhow, if ppl are so picky about halal halal, don't eat there. I know for a fact that he gets his meat from a good source, my mom gets it there too, and I always see Mr. Andesha there. Well I highly recommend Salang for its aura and ambience, great atmosphere, wonderful food, and about the waiters, who cares!! just eat ppl!!! Posted on December 8, 2004 |

★★★★☆ I love Salang. And, there are always Pakistanis in there. I highly recommend Salang Pass, and the owner, who happens to be pleasant ALL THE TIME, and I am Indian. Posted on December 8, 2004 |

|
★★★☆☆ I used to go to this restaurant very often. But then I found the owner of this restaurant yelling and screaming all the time against my country i.e. Pakistan. I don't think he should express his political thoughts in his business. One day I hesitatingly requested him not to express his thoughts in the particular manner and guess what he really started shouting. Anyway, I request at least Pakistanis to stop going there who thinks that his business doesn't need Pakistanis as American (white people) love his food and they are enough for him. ★★★★★ For those of you who feel you're being mistreated- it is unfortunate, but maybe if you leave better tips or if you stop ordering 1 boulanee for your entire family, things might change.? If you're going to eat out, you're going to have to dig a little deeper in your pockets; their prices are well worth the food. I personally am aware that the owner's wife cooks the food and it's beyond mouth watering delicious. They're both wonderful hardworking individuals, so stop bashing them. This site is about the restaurant, however, not the owners, so since the food is awesome & the environment is cozy, I highly recommend it to everyone! Posted on October 28, 2004 |

★★★☆☆ We had their buffet for ramazan for iftar 10.95 per person not bad but they charged full price for my 3 year old son who ate maybe one kabob they charged him 10.95 But the food was good just dont like the overcharge and the drinks they said was included but charged for some did not understand but oh well Posted on October 21, 2004 |

★★☆☆☆ The menu is very attractive and the food is delious, yet the service is horrible. On 3 different occasions my partys' order has been meesed up. And to top it off they do not make any attempt to compensate for the mistakes (All you get is a verbal apology.) The overall wait time it also too long. Posted on October 21, 2004 |

★★★★★ My husband and I happened upon Salang Pass based on the recommendations of our friends. The food was excellent- a ramadan buffet. The service was also excellent and the owner was attentive. Will return and recommend to others. Posted on October 20, 2004 |

★★★★★ You claim to be Andesha, which is the owners last name. Once again you negative people are coming on the board and posting blatant lies. If your name is Andesha, what relationship do you have to the owner? Grow up and get a life. Posted on October 14, 2004 |

★★★★★ I just saw the new menu that Salang has and am very impressed. I will try to eat all the new dishes and I absolutely love all the older dishes. My favority restaurant in Fremont. Good value (getting salad and bread with all the entrees is my favorite). Posted on October 14, 2004 |

★★★★★ Outstanding food, hospitable restaurant, and humble owner:
Salang Pass Restaurant is all that and more! Its unfortunate that other nearby Afghani restaurants can't strive to be like Salang. They have to resort to negative tactics.
Wahid jaan doesn't pay attention to childish games. He does what he does best, prepare mouth watering Halal Afghan cuisine for people to enjoy.
You've tried the rest, now try the Best!

★★★★★ I am a reviewer for San Francisco magazing and had the pleasure of eating at Salang after being referred by a fellow Muslim brother. I truly enjoyed the food and ambiance and highly recommend everyone to try the Qabili Palow and the Sabzi Challow. I also recommend the homemade ice cream with the noodles. Fantastic food and our magazing gave an amazing review that was so well deserved! Posted on September 29, 2004 |

★★★★★ Salang is one of my favorite restaurants, infact it is my favorite. The owner and staff are friendly and accomodating. I have been going there as long as I have lived in the Bay Area and have yet to understand why people say the food is not halal. Maiwand Market is across the street and Pamir Meat Market is next door just to state the obvious. The menu is marked halal, if your not convinced then take your business elsewhere. ★★★★★ Yes, this is truly sad. I heard from someone that Afghan Village in Newark has people go online to talk badly about Salang. Those who claim that they are relatives are from AFghan Village. Posted on September 22, 2004 |

★★★★★ I am ashamed that some of us here call yourselves Muslims. If you truly base your faith on Islam then Islam and our beautiful religion tells us not to spread lies and hurt our fellow brothers. I for a fact know through some friends that there are some in the community who have made it a point to go and bash Salang's reputiation on many sites here on the web. Ask why would someone go this far to do something like this? Shame on you, especially those who call yourselves relatives of the owner. These remarks are all based on jealousy and outright disrespect. I have been going to Salang for many years, as has many in my family and I praise Wahid and his hard working wife for creating a place with no alcohol and halal meat. I personally researched where he buys his meat and am 100% sure that the meat is all halal. Once again shame on all of you so called Muslims that eats a man's food and talks badly behind his back. After all he is a hard working man who is trying to support his family and community and for that alone, I will support him and his family continuously. All of you negative bashers, look deeply inside of yourselves and ask if you are truly Muslims for a true Muslim would never talk behind another's back and try to jeopardize someone's business. Believe in Karma for it will come knocking on your door for there is a God above!!!! Posted on September 19, 2004 |

★★★★★ Salang Pass is the best Near Eastern restaurant in the San Francisco Bay Area, outshining in my opinion all of our other Afghan, Persian, Turkish, Armenian, Greek, Arabic, and Israeli restaurants for both taste and value. My wife and I drive 30 miles to eat at Salang Pass. As health-conscious, practicing non-Orthodox Jews, we eat kosher, halal, and (permitted variety) organic meats, so we pay a lot of attention to the meat we eat. I found the accusations regarding Salang Pass' halal status disturbing. Rather than rely on rumors and possibly engage in slander (which, as you know, is regarded harshly by both the Jewish Talmud and Muslim hadith!), I made a few phone calls. First I called the restaurant and spoke to the owner. He reported that he gets his beef and lamb from Maiwand Market and chicken from Allied Food Sales (Oakland). I called Maiwand and spoke to Barat, who reported that Salang Pass buys its beef and lamb there (all halal, of course!). I called Allied and spoke to James Pagani, who reported that Salang Pass get fryers (whole chickens) that are not only halal, but free-range and hormone-free, and are raised locally at Fulton Valley (in Sonoma County); they also buy halal chicken breasts which are from out-of-state. I also called Sysco, expecting to be told that Salang Pass buys only non-food supplies from them. According to Sysco, Salang Pass has an account with them and buys Butcher's Block Choice sirloin ball tips, sirloin tri tips, and Sysco chicken breasts - definitely not halal. I was surprised and reread the person on the phone both the restaurant name and address to confirm. Assuming that this is not a mistake, it looks like Salang Pass serves a mix of halal and non-halal meats. I will still be eating at Salang Pass, but choosing my meat dishes CAREFULLY! ★★★☆☆ In their menu is says it is Halal. We had lunch and it was good. They saus that they will charge 15% gratuaity for party of 6 or more. but we were 4 adult, one 4 years kid and another 9 years kid and they charge us gratuaity in advance. I do not have problem giving tips/gratuity but I am surprised to know that they consider a 4 and 9 year kids as an adult person. Posted on August 24, 2004 |

★★★★★ Its surprising to see so many negative comments about this restaurant. It is clearly written on the menu card that all meats are halal. That should end the argument. The ambience, food and overall service is one that leaves you completely satisfied. Prices are decent too. Its a pity that there are some troublemakers who are passing unnecessary comments about this restaurant. Don't listen to those who rant over here but go and see for yourself. ★★★★★ Salang Pass is the best , I think that people some times just gets jealous or something but please they are there to help you and provide you. Best food in the town ( it is halal ).Coming to service I had a young boy waiter ( put it this way he was incredible I have been to many expensive restaurant but i have never seen a waiter like that ) KEEP IT UP SALANG PASS ! ! ! ★★★☆☆ The food is good so we took my father there for his birthday. We had to wait almost 15 minutes before someone came and even addressed us. I was confused but after reading some of the comments on this board I realize that it was probably because we are south asian. The owner came by and spoke to us later on in the evening, he was nice but the young waiters were unattentive and rude. Posted on March 17, 2004 |

★☆☆☆☆ A message posted by Nargis says that as true muslims we should accept the meat to be halal as we are told by the owner. First off, true muslims socialize at places that brings muslims and non mulims alike together in an atmosphere of peace and harmony. And quite fankly, based what some Indian and Paskistani folks have indicated on this message board, it all but that. Additioanlly, true muslims normally inquire about the individual running the business and base their acceptance of the meat they're told is halal, on the characteristics of the owner. ★★☆☆☆ I used to like their food alot and drive from santa Cruz just to eat there on weekends. Over the last year or so i have noticed a decline in the quality of service and food. I feel the waiters and owner have a warmer attitude toward the Americans as compared to people from Pakistan etc. I really am disappointed in salang and its staff! Posted on January 18, 2004 |

|
★☆☆☆☆ We stopped going there after hearing racist remakrs from the waiter. The owner did nothing about it. The waiter does not like Pakistani/Indian people (he said so) and actually yelled at me when I nicely told him of a hair in the kabob. We asked for the owner and he refused to come out and even speak to us.
We used to go there a lot but after the horrible treatment we do not advise any of our friends to go there. Posted on January 14, 2004 |

★★★☆☆ I'm very confused and frustrated shouldn't this be about the restaurant and the food and service and not about who ownes it. I'm sure all of you eat out do you know all those owners? Do you know their practises? And yet you still eat there. We need to support Afghan and Muslin stores and restaurants, because if we don't who will. Posted on January 7, 2004 |

★★★★★ I have been eating at this place for over 6 years now, its is also my wife's favorite place to eat. While the food is always excellant the service isnt always as good, but the food more than makes up for it.
As to his muslim beliefs and the meat being halal, i am not a muslim but i refuse to judge a man that has been very friendly and more than courteous to me every time i come through the door based one what someone else i dont know has said. I respect wahid and give him my business on the quality of his food and professionalism and his personal attention to his customers.
Nobody should talk behind someone else's back unless your prepared to say the same things in both places. I belief base on what i have seen that wahid is a very hardworking and caring man and also belief him to be a good muslim.
I only have great things to say about Wahid and his restaurant, food is amazing.

★★★★★ Salaam to all my Muslim brothers and sisters I am extremely disappointed to see the comments people are making.
Seriously I Highly recommended all the Muslims to go and eat there. I dont know who brings the meat but as true Muslims we should all know that if you are told that the meat is halal then it is halal for you...
I eat at salang every week and they have the best food....
It is soooo sad...VERY SAD ... to see Muslims posting such comments that they dont even know if its true or not...I am sure some of you just hear it or do not like the owner and just want to spread lies. I am ashamed of Muslims like that.

★☆☆☆☆ I went there last night after having heard lot of "good things" about their food but I regret my decision.
I have had chance to eat real afghan food in Islamabad through some afghani friends migrated to pakistan during war times.
The food is not at all worth the cost they charge and serving size is not great either.
Their naan is also not like what I used to get in Islamabad. I would never go there again and wouldn't recommend it either!!!! Posted on November 15, 2003 |

★★★★☆ "This is a message to all of the above concerning if Salang Pass serves halal meat or not? It is a very sad to read some of the remarks left above because if you can come to a site and critize a restaurant, than you should take the time to investigate the situation. I am a relative and I have worked at the restaurant myself. And to answer some of your questions. Yes, the meat served at Salang is all halal. The meat is purchased on a daily basis from Maiwand Market and also from Durham Meat company, in which sells halal meat. As for the comment about the Sysco delivery truck, sorry to inform you but Sysco sells more than just meat. All of the paper, oil, misc. supplies is purchased through them. And the last comment about alchol being served there, which is very rediculous. Just because an owner decides to drink alchol, it does not in turn mean he doesn't believe in creating a standard for his customers. On the contrary serving alchol would be an advantage to him, but he has chosen not to serve because of his Muslim society. I think if we want to sit here and claim halal, which means you stand behind being a Muslim, one should stand by to there belief and not talk badly about someone or a business without pure factual evidence. This is very hypocritical from my point of view. This site should be based on facts not derived opinions, and hurting someone's business is not fair. Overral this restaurant has outlasted many others, and the food is phenomenal." Posted on January 10, 2003 |

★★☆☆☆ "I last visited Salang Restaurant 4 months ago, and the food was awful. I am surprised to note good comments about the food at this restaurant. Despite what one man said about the meat being halal there after having inquired about it, I SERIOUSLY doubt that. Please make sure the one who tells you that is of good character, for anyone can lie to Muslims in an effort to attract them to their business. Please ask the owner's daughter [name deleted] who will honestly tell you where the meat is purchased from." Posted on July 31, 2002 |

★★★★☆ Nice place with great decor. Food is good if you are ready to wait atleast half an hour. The wait time depends on who you are. If you are an Afghani then the service is great. Americans get the same treatment. South Asians have to wait. There have been questions regarding the halal meat. I have to admit I have seen the owner [name deleted] buying whole beef and goat from Maiwand. This is the same place where restuarants like Afghan village, Tandoori and place in South Bay get their meat. Posted on July 25, 2002 |

★★★★☆ We visited Salang Pass almost after a year's absence and boy did we miss the food there. We stopped going to Salang Pass based on rumors that the meat serverd there is not Halal. So finally last Sunday March 17th we decided to go and inquire about these rumors from the owner. We questioned him where he gets his meat and what does he have to say about rumors of not serving Halal. His response was that he gets his meat from Maiwand and we could inquire about how much meat he gets to settle our concerns. All the meat served in the restaurant is Halal (Zabihah). ★★☆☆☆ In connection with what was previously posted about the meat served at Salang, I must say that it does not come as a surprise to me. The owner [name deleted] is well known in the community of Afghans that I am not going to reveal here. I simply want to add that while the food is excellent at this restaurant, the meat is most likely not halal. Please exercise caution when ordering meat at Salang and avoid arguments with the owner. ★★★★☆ I checked with the owner in late December 2000 and he swore that they serve halal meat. I tend to believe him as he has been serving the community for quite some time now. Posted on January 9, 2001 |

★☆☆☆☆ You should ask first, WHERE they get their meat. If they DO NOT want to tell you, DONT EAT THERE! Posted on November 4, 2000 |

★★★★☆ "Excellent atmosphere (floor seating, as well as table seating). The owner, Wahid Andesha, is very personable and friendly. Food is good. Catering available and prices are okay. Special thanks to Salang Pass for donating their time and kitchen to preparing lamb from last Eid for the AMILA Prison Da'wa Project." Posted on June 15, 1999 |
