★★★★★ Woo-Haa! I realize this is my second review of this spot, but I just got back from BKK, and had such a good meal.
This place is still representing the best that Islamic Thai food has to offer. This time I tried the Mataba Neua (Stuffed roti w/ Beef), and washed it down w/ a Kaffae Yen (Iced Coffee). As usual, the food was fast, tasty, and so cheap it hurts. The staff were super as well.

★★★★☆ Close to the corner where Charoen Krung Rd. and Silom Rd. meet, is this old-school Islamic-Thai spot with faded walls and wooden booths. It has an open front that overlooks the street. It packs a lunchtime crowd, and off-hours, there are usually some old-timers quietly reading the newspaper and drinking Kafae Rawn. The help are always friendly and there is an English menu.
They display many of the day's curries and treats in a glass case in front of the restaurant, so you can pick and choose, as you like. Or, feel free to order from the menu. Try the Gaeng Roti, (fried Roti with curry) or some classic Soup Hang Whoa (Ox-tail soup). You can be sure to eat your fill and not worry about money - most things on the menu are less than 50 Baht (around $1.50!). Posted on January 21, 2003 |
