Franklin BBQ |

900 East 11th Street, Austin, TX 78702
With the encouragement of friends, Aaron Franklin and his wife Stacy debuted Franklin BBQ in late 2009 on an East Austin parking lot. From the walk-up window of a travel trailer turned brisket stand, patrons quickly noticed the Franklins were selling the best barbecue around. By spring, the line of admirers snaked around the block, and the press followed. In less than two years, the duo could count contributors from The Washington Post, Texas Monthly, and Cooking Channel among a growing chorus hailing Franklin among America’s BBQ elite—mentioned in the breath as Smitty’s, Kreuz’s, and other stalwart temples to the holy craft of smoked meat that line the Central Texas brisket belt. In the summer of 2010, Bon Appetit hailed Franklin BBQ as the best in America. Added on June 14, 2014 and last updated 10 years ago
A NOTE ABOUT THE HALAL STATUS OF FRANKLIN BBQ
| |
|
This restaurant is listed as sourcing some/all of its meat from a known supplier of Halal meat. This means that the management or employees of this restaurant may not be aware of their own halal status if asked. However, they may be able to confirm their meat supplier is Creekstone Farms, in which case you can proceed if you feel comfortable eating there. Feel free to click on the name of the supplier and/or certifier listed in the Halal summary to learn more about their Halal procedures. Even if you do decide to eat here, we recommend you politely ask that they clean their grill and ensure no contact with non-Halal meat or alcohol. |

Creekstone Farms is reported to supply Halal meat to this restaurant, which uses it in one or more of its dishes. The meat for Creekstone Farms is certified by Halal Transactions of Omaha. From a reader: 'I only know that their brisket is from Creekstone.' Another reader received an email response from Franklin: 'Yep! for brisket we do use Creekstone'

NR This place should be avoided because they cook their beef, while Halal from Creekstone Farms, on shared surfaces with pork shoulder, ribs, and sausages. Admin, JAK for tip on asking to clean grill, but Franklin's has communicated that's not something they do for their workflow (1), and (2) that wouldn't suffice to maintain Halal. This listing should be removed. More info here: http://muslimeater.com/2019/04/23/which-bbq-spots-with-halal-meat-cross-contaminate-with-pork-and-which-dont/ Posted on May 3, 2019 |

NR They are not halal or zabihah. While they serve Halal certified Creekstone Farms beef brisket, it shares cooking and prep surfaces with their pork ribs, shoulder, and sausages.
“While we do use Halal beef, we do cook our briskets in the same cookers as we cook our pork products,” says Stacy Frankling, wife of owner Aaron Franklin, in an email. “The briskets are placed on the same grates as the pork.”
So no it isnt zabihah.
Edit: if you understand how brisket is done, it is smoked for a long period of time. Having them use a clean knife and gloves doesn't make it okay when it's cooked with the pork. Posted on January 26, 2019 |
This is why we post the disclaimer: 'we recommend you politely ask that they clean their grill and ensure no contact with non-Halal meat or alcohol' |
