Zankou Chicken |
 |
2424 West Ball Road, Anaheim, CA 92804
The first Zankou Chicken was opened in 1962 in the heart of Beirut, Lebanon by Vartkes Iskenderian and his family. In 1984, Zankou opened its doors in Hollywood. In 1992, Mardiros Iskenderian opened the second Zankou Chicken in Glendale, California. Further Zankou Chicken restaurants opened in Van Nuys, Anaheim, Pasadena. Later with the opening of the West LA and Burbank location, Zankou gave customers a glimpse into the restaurant's future: where delicious, high quality, inexpensive meals are served amidst an elegant ambiance. ★★★★★ Zankou is a classic. This spot is located in a run down strip mall, but it is always reliable for a delicious chicken shawarma or rotisserie chicken sandwich or plate. The beef shawarma is tender and delicious as well. Posted on January 24, 2020 |

★★★★★ Wow! This is the best halal Rotisserie chicken I've had. Posted on October 30, 2016 |
|
|
★★★★☆ Halal certificate on display. Tried the whole rotisserie chicken which was very tender and moist. The Tri-tip shawerma was also very good. Beef kebabs were also good. Garlic sauce is good. They also give you peppers on the side if you want (warning very hot). Great food and friendly service. Interior of this location has 1970's style wood paneling so not very appealing to sit and eat there but the food is great. Posted on February 26, 2015 |

★★★★☆ Very good Broiled half chicken and hummus plate, loved it. The Lule kabob wasnt that good. Will definitely be back to try the shawarma. I did see the Halal certificate on display in the store. Posted on November 11, 2013 |

★★★★★ I used to live right across this place, so we were weekly regulars. Best broiled whole chicken I have ever had. Their garlic sauce is great! Posted on September 21, 2013 |

NR I was told this place was halal again. Can anyone verify this information Posted on April 10, 2013 |

★☆☆☆☆ This place is not halal.. People, please do not leave positive reviews here for NON-ZABIHAH restaurants. The intent of this website is to have "zabihah" only restaurants, leaving reviews here for non-zabihah entities makes it confusing for those who consume zabihah only.
Leave your non-zabihah reviews elsewhere please, do not contaminate this site. Posted on January 23, 2011 |

★★★★★ amazing sandwiches and service! food is a must!
wish they had more locations Posted on October 9, 2010 |

★★★★☆ I ordered the chicken shawerma and liked it a lot. The chicken was tender, not overcooked, and not undercooked. I didn't ask them for halal authenticity but my friend said that everything there is zabiha, and I trust him. However I think assuming the food is not zabiha because they're Armenian is racist. ★★★★☆ It's been a long time since been here but the flavor of the food was good. Ate at the one in Hollywood. I believe they are the same. Not sure if halal. Had salads and some chicken. Reasonable price. Posted on September 25, 2009 |

★★★★☆ I doubt very much if the Armenian family that runs this chain really provides halal food. Other than that, the food tastes good but they have stopped giving out the pickled vegies/peppers that used to come with the dishes. I guess with the bad economy, they are getting more tightfisted. Armenians can cook some good middle eastern food but the latino workers do look tired/nervous all the time. Posted on July 12, 2009 |

★☆☆☆☆ The main reason for the POOR rating and why I will not eat at this location again is because a source, which I will remain nameless to protect the person's and his/her families well-being, has told me about the way employees are treated when it comes to their breaks and lunches.
Yes those folks in the yellow t-shirts. As you know many of them do not come from the same country we come from. Many of them are mexican and ca me to this country just like our parents or grandparents had done for a better living. Some of them are young and some of them are old. You also know that they are hard workers. The restaurant is always clean and the food is great.
THEN WHY DOES THE MANAGEMENT NOT ALLOW THEIR EMPLOYEES TO LEAVE THE RESTAURANT DURING THEIR BREAKS AND LUNCHES. Can you imagine if you or I were told by our supervisor/manager that we cannot leave for work during our break or lunch. What would you do? Fortunately, we are aware of the laws of this state and country, but these employees don't or are scared to stand up. The management at this location is exploiting the employees in this respect. I am not sure of any other areas...yet.
You the reader/patron should not stand for this. If you agree with the above, then don't eat there. If you don't believe the above then go witness it. See if the employees go on break and leave the restaurant? Ask the location's management about their policy.
If you are the owner/manager of this location, you are given a chance to correct this unjust and illegal policy. You're also given a chance to share your side. I will monitor this situation and provide updates an any developments. If I do not hear about things improving, I will report this the EDD (california's employment development dept.) about your policy. You know who the EDD is right?! Posted on May 17, 2008 |

★★★★☆ This is an Armenian place, and the food they server there is ABSOLUTELY NOT HALAL. Sure, it's mediterranean food, but that doesn't mean they're Muslims. Posted on December 17, 2004 |
|
|
★★★★★ Go to this restaurant if you are looking for excellent Lebanese/Armenian food for a good price. Food is so good that Halal does not matter at this place. You do not go to Armenian restaurant if you are looking for Halal food. Posted on July 7, 2004 |

★★★★☆ hi i go there atleast once a week. Thier food is so good but i want to know that is it halaal? Posted on February 12, 2004 |

★☆☆☆☆ This place is not halal, i asked one employee whether or not its halal, and she didnt even know what halal meant. then another Employee stoped me and asked me what i had asked her. Then he said, oh .. ok yes its halal she doesnt know what halal is. That putme in more doubt. Plus. they are not Arabs or Muslims. Posted on December 11, 2003 |

★★★★☆ We tried both the Beef Shawarma and Chicken Tarna sandwiches and plates. The size of the sandwiches were inadequate, but tasty. Perhaps the sizes need to be worked on. However the plates were quite a portion! Posted on July 21, 2003 |

★★☆☆☆ Not halal. This is an Armenian restaurant chain whose owners are probably Christian and not Muslim. Posted on May 30, 2003 |

★★★☆☆ I really need to know whether or not this place is halal. Posted on May 9, 2003 |

★★★★★ "I've only been to the Anaheim location, but I've now tried everything on the menu, all of it is good and the prices are low, we eat here at least once a week. If you are a first-timer, make sure to get the rotisserie chicken and don't skimp on the garlic paste. The ""half chicken plate"" seems to be the perfect sized entree and at just under six dollars you can't go wrong. Also, not on the menu, but you can get an extra six pieces of toasted flatbread for fifty cents!" Posted on January 25, 2003 |

★☆☆☆☆ This place is NOT HALAL and is owned by an Armenian (not Muslim) who will say and do anything to keep money rolling in. Posted on December 11, 2002 |

★★★★★ "If I were not Muslim, I would probably build a temple and worship Zankou Chickens amazing Garlic Sauce. The Shawerma and Tarna plates are excellent. Their chicken sandwiches are terrific. I can't stop thinking about those chicken sandwiches. I always order two with extra Garlic Sauce. Just right for lunch along with a cold beverage. The rotisserie chicken is awesome. Always juicy and full of flavor. I just wish the ""plates"" were a buck or two cheaper." Posted on June 3, 2002 |

★★☆☆☆ I asked them at Zankou if the meat/chicken was Halal and they said that it was not. Posted on September 19, 2000 |

★★☆☆☆ The meat used at this establishment is not Islamically Halal meat. We have checked their source. The owners are Christians and despite the fact tell people their chicken is halal! Posted on September 8, 2000 |

★★★★★ This place has the best rotisserie chicken I have ever tasted! They also serve shawarma, tarna, and falafel sandwiches/plates and much more. But nothing beats their chicken! They also have restaurants in Hollywood, Glendale, Van Nuys, and Pasadena. Posted on July 20, 2000 |

★★★★☆ "If you like chicken, this is the place to be. The best rotisserie chicken, and shawarma. They also serve falafel and chicken shawarma, called tarna, and is to die for. Don't forget the garlic paste. This is a chain in LA, they have about 4 or 5 stores all over LA. It is owned by an Armenian/Lebanese couple. Only the Orange County restaurant, since it is right next to most of the Halal grocery stores, uses Zabihah meat. The rest, I am not sure. Call to confirm, the other locations are in Hollywood and Burbank." Posted on July 19, 2000 |
