★★★★★ The cuisines of the Middle East can be divided roughly into three categories, i) Turkish; ii) Persian; and iii) Arabic. Within the Arabic category, the food from Syria and Lebanon is considered to be the best. Taking this a step further, Aleppo (in Syria) has the best food in all of Syria & Lebanon. More or less one can say that the best Arabic food is from Aleppo (Syria). In Northern New Jersey we are blessed with a few Syrian Restuarants including one from Aleppo (Aleppo Restaurant 939 Main Street, Paterson NJ Tel: 973-977-2244).
One has only to try the charcoal grilled chicken at Aleppo Restaurant to understand why the food from Aleppo (Syria) is held in such high esteem. To those that talk about Italian food and French food, I ask them to show me something that is as good as the charcoal grilled chicken from Aleppo. I can assure you that you will be hard pressed to find a recipe of grilled chicken anywhere in the world that compares favorably.
There is more to the cuisine from Aleppo than just grilled chicken. Take for example the Khaskas Kabab (also called Aleppo Kabab), this is one of the finest examples of Kofte Kabab. I pray that all those that read this review get a chance to eat Khaskas Kabab.
Finally allow me to recommend two more dishes (there is so much more to recommend, but we have to end at some point); i) Mehshe, i.e. Zuchini (& Eggplant) stuffed with rice and meat and eaten by a dipping into a Syrian version of Marinara sauce (for lack of a better name); ii) Misakhaan an open faced chicken sandwich. ★★★★☆ This restuarant (Allepo) is no more. They have another Mediterranean resurtant "Al-Safa" here now. Food here is pretty nice also. Posted on December 18, 2006 |
