HALAL SUMMARY
The staff of this market has verbally confirmed halal status.
★★★★★ Giant Eagle Market District is a large chain American grocery store. They offer a variety of organic foods and ethnic groceries, including some Halal meat items. They sell a few different types of Nema Halal meats including Chicken & Beef Hot dogs, Mild & Hot Sucuk, and Mortadella. Each is between $3.50 and $5, which is a bit pricy, but its nice for a big grocery store to offer halal meat. The meat is located in the meat section under a big red sign that says NEMA Halal Meats. When buying, please be sure that it says Nema and has halal written on the package, as there are a lot of non-halal meats nearby.
EDIT: (2013) It seems that Giant Eagle officially no longer carries the prepared halal meats. The venture seemed plagued from the start with improper signage, strange placement of the halal meat mixed with pork products, and issues with the supplier. Apparently, there were also complaints from other customers. On occasion, Giant Eagle does carry some Indian ready-made frozen dinners. This is not consistent, however, whereas Whole Foods tends to offer them more regularly. Posted on May 28, 2013
