★★★☆☆ We ordered 2 entries with Uber Eats. Kung Pao was sweeter than anytime pre-Covid-19 we eaten there. The chicken was hard, almost rough. When I called the restaurant manager Lynette explained that the her brother chef Kevin has been cooking meats well done to be safe but before ordering ask for rare or medium. Manchurian Beef was good and spicy. Our order had everything we asked including the soy & red chili sauces. Posted on August 24, 2020 |

★☆☆☆☆ My family and I used to love this place, but the prices have gone up and the quality has gone way down. We spent $50 for 3 of us at lunchtime, but the sesame chicken and sweet & sour chicken were overcooked, dry, chewy and inedible. I sent the sweet & sour chicken back, but the second time it came it was still dry and overcooked. Hot, yes. Edible, no. To top it off, they still include an 18% gratuity in all checks, which is definitely not earned. The fried chicken wings were only slightly overcooked, and we were able to eat those. I have no complaints about the egg drop soup. Overall, I was very disappointed and will not be going back there for a very long time. Posted on January 12, 2017 |

★☆☆☆☆ I rarely write reviews but after the recent experience at Mandarin I had to put something up so other people can avoid going to the place and wasting their money. I guess they think since its halal they can have substandard food and get over on people. I ordered the general tso chicken over the phone for pickup. When I went to pick it up I was surprised at the $15 price they were charging for the general chicken but was like whatever. Like other reviewers stated; when I went to eat it the chicken (that’s what they call it) it was extremely dry and fibrous. The chicken was more like bubble gum because it was just so old and dry. You just keep chewing and it doesn’t go anywhere so you just end up spitting it out. I ended up throwing away at least 75% of the food because it was just inedible. I don’t know if they’re just taking the leftover buffet from the day before and just microwaving it or what but I could not think of any explanation of how the chicken the its strange hard dry texture. Ive never had any chicken like this before from anywhere else. Extremely overpriced and bad tasting food I don’t think I will be going back to wasted my money again. Posted on June 14, 2015 |

★★☆☆☆ Fuhgeddaboutit!!! We are used to NY and NJ halal food, but ever since we moved here, don't find too many decent halal food options; period.
The food is ok there. However, the owner needs to start respecting her customers and as a courtesy; at least, say hello. I have never seen her approach any customers and try to either help or enquire how is the food.
The waitresses are not the greatest either. Finally, the 20% tip is the other thing that's kind of annoying as well. Posted on January 31, 2015 |

★☆☆☆☆ I've been going to this place for a few years but haven't been back for maybe 1 to 2 yrs. I've read their reviews and have always been concerned about their service or the lack thereof. My wife after wrapping up in Maryland decided to go here rather than driving to our regular place in ashburn. I have never been disgusted by the food I've eaten ever as much as I was the night I ate their food. It seemed as if the chicken was either days old or dried up chicken was later fried. We were chewing pieces asking ourselves why it was so stringy. It felt as if we were chewing on grass or hay that wouldn't break. After 30 seconds or so we took it out and it looked all fibery. Amazed as to how their service has gone down dramatically over the years. Absolutely horrible. Posted on December 9, 2014 |

★★★★★ I went to Mandarin Halal for dinner tonight and it was a very good experience. The restaurant was clean and service was okay. We ordered a large bowl of chicken corn soup and it came out piping hot. It had good consistency with plenty of chicken. The soup was delicious. For the main meal, we ordered Kung Pao Chicken and Pepper Steak w/ Onion. Both dishes came to the table hot and freshly prepared in large portions. Both were excellent! The meat in both dishes were tender and juicy. The vegetables were crispy. Our server was polite and took care to make sure we knew that the Kung Pao Chicken had peanuts and that we could order it without peanuts if we wanted to. They added the gratuity on their own, but I didn't mind. Desis have a terrible tendency to not tip or tip very poorly. The food was wonderful and I had no complaints at all. Well done! ★☆☆☆☆ I have been going to this restaurant since it opened up. At the being the food was good, but never great. As a Muslim I wanted to support a halal business. However, over the year (as word of month got around) and customer increased the food had gone from okay to nasty!!! Sorry there is no other way to describe it. On top of it they have increased the prices and add 15% - 20% gratuity …depending on size if your party. Shame on you Richard for taking advantage of the customers!!! I will never spend a dime in this restaurant again. And I suggest you don't either -- only way they will learn or change is when we stop going. Posted on May 18, 2014 |

Worst chinese food, I would like start with saying if this resturant not halal it would go out of business longtime ago, the reason it still in business is Halal, food is worst chinese food ever, also pricey, on top of that the owner chinese lady is very rude if you ask her about food, she became very impatient that why i am not order alot of food, well i have to know whats in it, like I ordered appitizer Taryaki chicken stick when it come i tried it first of all there is no taryaki sauce on it, the chicken was dry as hell, taste like chicken stips fried on pan, i ask the chinese lady about that again as usual she became impatient and told me if i order taryaki chichken i need to pay $4, the my main course the peanut taste funny i ask her again why the peanuts taste funny, she upsetly pickup spoon from my table and try it say ok i fix it no sorry nothing, you guys what she did she want in take out the same food with out peanuts, at that time i had enough i getup and left with my family, this is the second time it happen my other friends also stop going there we need a good tasting Halal chinese food in VA, if you want to try just order Taryaki chicken from appitizer and see for yourself Posted on November 26, 2013 |

★★☆☆☆ I appreciate the fact that there is a halal Chinese restaurant in the DMV area, I just thought it was terrible. Granted I am spoiled by the abundance of halal Chinese places in California, and I realize that my friends like this place, but I would much rather eat vegetarian at a non-halal place. The food was okay, but I couldn't help thinking that this was overpriced mall-court quality food. Service was also okay. Posted on November 15, 2013 |

★☆☆☆☆ This place has really declined in quality and service. We were ignored most of our visit. I had to get up and ask for water and our drinks. Soup came out cold and definitely was not fresh. When I flagged down the waitress she took it back and instead of bringing a fresh batch she had simply microwaved it. It's horrible how these places take advantage of those of us who only eat halal because they know we have little other choices in terms of halal food. I will not return again. ★★★☆☆ This place is a long-running staple in Northern VA. It's also the only decent halal Chinese option in the area. I've been coming here for years with friends and family. I've tried most of the menu, and have found some pretty great dishes that I usually stick to.
Try the Hakka crispy chicken and the Hakka crispy beef. I would actually say that you can't judge Mandarin until you've ordered either of those dishes. The general tso's chicken or the general tso's combo are good. The beef and broccoli and the pepper steak are delicious. The Kung Pao chicken and the Hunan chicken are also good. The Lo mein noodles are pretty good too. Their soups and appetizers are also pretty delicious. The wontons are really good. Wonton soup is also really good, so is the hot and sour soup.
The service is decent. The waitresses are generally friendly and the wait time isn't too bad. You get served what is obviously tap water, which I've honestly just gotten accustomed to over the years. I don't even notice it anymore, though when I eat there with someone new to it, they're not always happy about it.
I'm honestly not always satisfied or happy with my experience afterwards. I always feel like I'm getting overcharged, especially since gratuity is automatically added to every bill. Even if you eat with a small party, you still get charged gratuity. I'm generally a very generous tipper, but when I get forced into giving that extra amount, it just sours the experience for me for whatever reason.
The space is large and can accommodate big groups. It does get quite busy though, so plan to show up before the rush if you want to have a large gathering. Posted on August 24, 2012 |

★★★★★ Their service is great! I, and my brother, went there on the day we had the storm that caused massive power outages in the area. Right when we were about to leave, power was lost and we couldn't pay with card. We barely had any cash so we fell short by some dollars. The waitresses were nice enough to take our word and let us leave WITHOUT WRITING DOWN OUR CARD NUMBER! Of course we paid the balance later.....great food; their spicy wings are a big hit!!!! ★☆☆☆☆ The service is so poor. Especially during Ramadan iftaar time they are not even giving water. I don't recommend for families to go there to open iftaar. The charge a tip for a iftaar buffet. In a buffet you get your own food and they still charge a tip of 15% for doing what bringing the plates out? Thats part of their job. This is the worst place because they precharge for tip. ★★★☆☆ Food is good but not all dishes are tasty. I like sesame chicken, chili chicken and hot and sour soup. The biggest complain is 20% gratuity automatically added no matter if you are eating alone or with a party of 5. Its a rip off. But people like their food so had no choice. ★★★☆☆ I went to Mandarin Restaurant for iftar yesterday and was surprised to see the casual atmosphere. To be fair, where I am from in Los Angeles, Halal chinese is very popular and its a cloth napkin experience with many restaurants to choose from. We tried their iftar buffet and the food was decent and the service was wonderful. They went out of their way to pull a folding table and sat us with another family just so we could eat. I definitely wouldn't go out of my way to return to this restaurant, however if I was craving decent halal chinese I might return. ★★★☆☆ Had to wait for 50 mins on Sat night b4 got seated.
1. Staff didn't take names for customer, recognizing and guessing by face, which is very strange
2. People dressed in shalwar kemeez /traditional clothes like they are attending desi functions. Looking at others like strangers (totally dipo's)
3. Food is fast food standard
4. Service is handled by spanish staff, good manners but kinda clueless
Basically, average food and have to eat with a bunch of jahil's is the tough one. I had a little one and had no space to get out of the table the rude desi's only look and have no courtesy of giving space to others.

★★★★☆ This is one of my favorite restaurants of all time. The food is always good, the staff is always friendly and the food is priced from very low to a reasonable price. However, it is worth every penny! They recently renovated the entire facility so the atmosphere is even better. Also, they take off 10% when you pay in cash. There is one zinger though: the automatic gratuity on the bill. I am a firm believer that if the service is good, then i will leave a good tip, but the gratuity gets a little annoying. ★☆☆☆☆ After all the rave reviews we decided to give it try. What a letdown. Ordered crab rangoon, chicken wings, sizzling steak, and hakka chicken. ALL were pretty bad. The rangoon was samosas stuffed with cream cheese. The wings had no sauce with them. The hakka chicken was chicken with a sugar glaze. And the steak was tasteless. The worst part was a mandatory 20% tip that was included in the bill for a party of 2. Bill was over $50 for all this. Very disappointed. ★★☆☆☆ I was really disappointed. I went on a Friday night with high expectations after all these raving reviews on Zabihah. We were seated without menus. We were a party of five but only had 4 plates on the table. The waitress forgot our drinks. After we reminded her she came back with pepsi but we ordered sprite. The main dishes appeared in the middle of our appetizer consumption. There was no room on the table and the waitress basically asked us to pack our appetizer as she cannot just sit on the side with our food. This is the first time ever in my 19 years of stay in the US that I was not allowed to enjoy my appetizer. I was willing to overlook all of this hoping the dinner would make up for the mistakes. The portions were generous but lacking in taste. Generic chilli sauce drenched all the main dishes and made it tastelessly spicy. My kids love general tso's chicken but this one was so hot that they could hardly start their meal. Allah knows best, maybe I went on a bad night. I will give it another try on a weeknight. Next time I plan to call ahead to make sure the owner is there before I make the 40 minute drive. Posted on January 14, 2008 |

General Tso's Chicken was good. Hakka Crispy Chicken was really good and very spicy (like it should be) but must be eaten fresh. It hardens up quickly. ★★★★☆ If you are expecting your standard chinese food such as would be in most other chinese-american restaurants this is not it. The owners fill a different niche of cuisine - namely the pakistani- chinese cuisine as they are pakistani-chinese themselves. Just as the flavors of pakistani vary from region to region, so does the food of people living between the countries and people who migrated from china to pakistan. The food, depending on which dish you order, can be spicy. And it is quite delicious. Be careful, however, as spicy to the owners may be far more spicy than you expect. It is a family restaurant but with all the very large typical Muslim families that frequent the place with lots of crying or screaming children, it's far from a peaceful environment at times. ★★★★★ My family was happy that there is a Chinese Halal Restaurant in Virginia. The food is tasty and reasonable with large portions. The staff was pleasant and accommodating. We would go there again when we are in that area. Authentic Chinese décor. Posted on April 13, 2007 |

★★★★★ Very good food and great service. I like their chicken dishes better than their beef dishes. Lunch special is a great deal. Posted on March 12, 2007 |

★★★★★ I personally don't like any kind of chinese food, but my spouse loves the authentic chinese. We went there and it was a blend of chinese and desi chinese. I loved their mango icecream.
Service is great and nice. mashaAllah they were very busy on sat night with overflowing customers.
But somehow, we have never felt like going there again - probably the extra spice in the food ruin the authentic tase of chinese. I guess, they know who their customers are. Unfortunatley, we just wanted to eat "chinese". Posted on March 2, 2007 |

★★★★★ This place is absolutely the best halal chinese food place in the area (probably also the only one). My wife and I have eaten at many halal chinese restaurants (mostly in New York) and this is hands down, the best one. Their food is exceptional and their service is great. ★★★★☆ Finally, a decent and authentic halal Chinese place that's not in New York. The Chinese brothers who own the place are from my hometown of Karachi and are third generation Pakistanis and speak excellent Urdu. We ordered the Hunan Chicken and Manchurian Beef both tasted good and were true to the Chinese flavor but were a bit on the greasey side. The restaurant itself is spacious and coud accomodate larger parties. A proper Halal Chinese place has been missing from the Washington metro scene for many years since Paking Eastern closed down and this place does fill the void. I'm sure with a little bit of honest criticism of the food the slight shortcomings in the food can be overcome--its only been open for 4 weeks. Nevertheless, I am sure to return with the family. ★★★★★ No Question about GOOD TASTE and FRIENDLY service...excellent; just AWESOME!
Family is third generation Chinese-Pakistani, who resently moved from Pakistan to USA and have generations of great experience in Chinese authentic cusines.
HALAL meat supplier is famous Desi Muslim store DESIBAZAR, which is just walking distance away from the restaurent itself.
Price wise, i guess its just...fine, I am hoping they WON'T raise it soon.
My Brother Haris tried it, Loved it and then we went there together in a heavey snow/bad weather...but believe me the Taste was worth trevalling for.
TWO THUMBS UP and I am definitly bringning more of my friends there ! Posted on February 13, 2007 |
