★★★★★ my favorite dishes for this restaurant are briyani and roti naan. simply delicious! Posted on June 30, 2015 |
|
|
★★☆☆☆ Edible is the most I can say about this food.
Not fresh. Runny yogurt, old curries, vegetables cooked into mush. The naan was good. The tandoori chicken was colored artificially and not spiced with turmeric. The staff and the customers looked to be Hindu. I wonder if they even taste the meat dishes they are cooking. Posted on March 24, 2014 |

★★★★☆ Great South Indian food.......Not too pricey and the service is decent. Posted on July 23, 2009 |

★★★★★ I talked to the owner and he confirmed that the food is Halal. Posted on September 17, 2007 |

★★★☆☆ Update: February 2007.
I recently noticed that the Halal certificate is no longer on display. Does this imply that they have changed suppliers and therefore the food is no longer halal?
The food was a bit above average and reasonably priced. However, am a wee bit wary on whether the food is really halal ... A couple of reasons for this: For one, when I asked the response was a half-hearted/not-confidence-inspiring yes. Secondly - not that it's totally relevant - there is a picture on the right side wall near the kitchen that reveals a religious affiliation with no halal requirement on food. ★★★☆☆ From my own experience, I would say that this is a very good place for south indian esp keralite food.
Lately, they hiked, rather doubled the price for all the items (except combos).
- Curry varieties no longer come with a rice now even with additional price.
- There is a drastic diff in the SIZE of 'masala vada' which they serve now from the one they served before.
- Quantity is less now for the doubled price.
- I'm afraid that this restaurant which was once fav among most south indians for their reasonable price & large quantity would loose its fame. Posted on June 1, 2006 |

★★★★★ This is one of the best South Indian restaurant I've been to. They have briyani, masala dosa, and much, much more. Food is very good. Though they could improve their "vade". Prices are very cheap and store is pretty clean. I come here at least once a week with my family. Posted on December 23, 2005 |

★★★★☆ Assalamualaikum, For those who don't understand Indian culture, please note food served is from Kerala, This particular state has a huge muslim population who relish this type of food. As a person from South India, I like the food out there.. especially More Kozhumbu.(most folks will hate it because you are not used to this..) I think owner is taking genuine interest in catering to muslim clients.. I do not see any problem in eating from restaurant serving halal food but owned by non-muslim..As far cooking oil..Indian typically do not use any oil which has gelatin..I think it is relatively safe to eat in this restaurant.. by the way I am no way connected to the owner.. just a south indian explaining the food to others who do not understand Kerala culture... ★★☆☆☆ The owners are non muslims. Also, the food is really bad. The food is already cooked and its NOT made fresh. People mostly go for cheap price and the variety it has. Posted on October 14, 2004 |

★★★★☆ Excellent food. Great price too. But not top notch. I like this place a lot and visit it often. Posted on September 14, 2004 |

★★★★★ This establishment is a must visit. I felt like I was in Madurai all over again. Wow!
First, though, I must say that the large selection is a little daunting. However, the best way to tickle your palate is to start with two eggs sunny side up. Really, this offering compares in quality to anything you may have eaten at IHOP. In fact, I think I will not be going back to IHOP.
Next, we had chicken biryani, and I was delighted to see that it came with a boiled egg. Frankly, I don't think I have eaten a better boiled egg. Did I already say IHOP beware???
By the way, my wife had a spinach dosa, but I was very skeptical of the Western influences on the dosa. After all, there is no spinach dosa in Madurai. However, it was quite good and the only problem was that it did not come with an egg. Really, I think it is time for an egg dosa.
Overall, this was an egg-celent experience. And frankly, I think some people on this board are getting too caught up in strange reviews. For instance, Arif says that the chicken tastes like sambhar. Hey man, don't you know what sambhar tastes like? Posted on April 6, 2004 |

★★☆☆☆ Same price as the better restaurants like Shalimar, etc. but food is not that good. Some dishes are good though. Posted on March 16, 2004 |

★★★☆☆ Food is good and reasonable. They need to improve their Nan Quality. I have never experienced that kind of nan anywhere.I have complained couple of times. Hope they will provide better nan to their customers. Posted on March 8, 2004 |

★☆☆☆☆ Bad service, food is so-so and overpriced menu. On the whole, a bad experience that could have been better avoided Posted on March 3, 2004 |

★★★☆☆ We are so privileged to serve a number of Halal food seekers at Spice Hut. Quite a few people visited Spice Hut after they saw the reviews in Zabihah.com. However, there seems to be some concerns regarding our supply of Halal food. We would like to clarify that we receive meat from authenticated Halal meat suppliers who are the major players in the valley.
This has been very clearly communicated to everyone who has question when they talked to the management. We have always been willing to show the Halal certificate to any one who wants to look it.
The management honors the value Islamic community places on Halal meat. And the management does not include anyone from Islamic community. This is not gimmicks to draw the Halal food seekers. We do not have to go to that cheap level to bring business to our place.
We would be glad to discuss with any one who has any concerns or questions about our food supply. We would like to keep the communication line open, so we request anyone who reviews Spice Hut need not be anonymous. Please call us on 408 739 7535 if anyone has any questions. - josephmanoharan@hotmail.com [Administrator's note: Posts by owners are listed as rating 3 for average so as to not unfairly weight the overall rating.] Posted on March 2, 2004 |

★★★☆☆ Food is overall good. But sometimes the chicken stinks Posted on January 12, 2004 |

★★★☆☆ Spice hut is a decent place with decent food and decent prices. There is a big halal sign on the window that announces that the chicken is hand-slaughtered and certified by someone from Santa Clara masjid. It is mentioned that this place is owned by Muslims. I'm not sure if this is correct. Can someone clarify this ? I feel the place is run by Christians from Kerala in India. Not that I have anything against these guys. However, I am concerned that Zabihah displays that this restaurant is owned by Muslim. Posted on January 3, 2004 |

★★★★☆ Food is good but spicy. People who like spicy, this place is good. I had to take curd in the evening to balance. Posted on December 23, 2003 |

★★★☆☆ The place has the ambience of a normal fast food joint. They've lots of gas heaters outside, which makes it a nice hangout place. The food is okay - nothing terrific. All dishes (including meats) are prepared in South Indian style. What this means for you is that you must not go in expecting chicken curry to taste like Mughlai chicken curry. It will taste more like sambhar! All the meat dishes are very hot. My wife had smoke coming out of her ears!! All in all, a decent place. Posted on November 16, 2003 |

★★★★★ I have checked with the owner of Spice Hut and I am confident that the meat is Halal. Its great food!! and it is cost effective too. Posted on November 10, 2003 |

★★★★★ There is a posting inside the restaurant which shows a certificate that the chicken served in the restaurant is halah/zabihah. I checked with the owner regarding the mutton dishes and he said that the mutton is also halal/zabihah. The food quantity and prices are reasonable. Gets pretty full in the afternoon. Since the food is fresh you have to wait a bit for the order to be ready. Overall experience was good. I would recommend this place to anyone who likes indian/south indian food.
