★☆☆☆☆ This was one of my fav Restaurants here in the Bay Area! So sad to see it deceive the Muslim community by mixing Zabihah and non-Zabihah meat. Cannot reocmmend as they are no longer “100% Halal” Posted on April 24, 2018 |

★☆☆☆☆ This is now know to be one of the worst service restaurant among the muslim community in the bay area. They have also started to mix 80% halal with 20% non-zabiha meat and deceiving its muslim customer base. I just say to fellow Zabiha meat eaters: stay away. Not worth it anymore. You cannot trust this establishment any more. Read the review from local long time customers and make your call. Posted on April 8, 2018 |

★☆☆☆☆ AVOID! Posting a halal sign or a picture of Jerusalem doesn't mean you are halal. To echo what was said below, I would advise people to stay away and if one must go make sure the prep is free of cross contamination (which may be hard to do here as I doubt things are cooked to order). It pains me to give this poor rating as I used to like this place, but 1 star. Posted on March 21, 2018 |

★★★★★ Fast service, really good food & everyone gets a free ice cream cone. There's a clear sign of halal at the door and on the menu. Posted on March 9, 2018 |

★☆☆☆☆ NOT HALAL
On December 2, 2017, my friends and I decided to go to Ma’s Restaurant for lunch. Given that Ma’s has been a recent cause for controversy in the community, specifically with regards to whether or not they serve halal meat, we sought to get clarity on the matter. Note that in times past there had been attempts by two other friends (each on separate occasions) to get to the bottom of this, but the results were always inconclusive.
Upon entering the restaurant, one friend (let’s call him Muhammad) went straight to one of the waiters - Kevin - and very directly brought up the aforementioned concerns in the community. It’s worthy to note that Muhammad has been a loyal patron of this restaurant and has a great rapport with many of the servers (Kevin and Steven being two of them). Kevin ensured our entire group that they are absolutely 100% halal, and proudly boasted that they are the only *purely* halal restaurant in the Bay area for 28 years. Reassured by his unequivocal guarantee, we entered the restaurant and found ourselves a table. We then proceeded to order the following dishes, making sure to confirm for a second time that all of the meat we ordered was absolutely and unmistakably halal: sweet and sour soup, szechaun beef, szechuan chicken, chicken chow mein and chicken fried rice.
While exchanging pleasantries with Kevin, we discovered that the owner of Ma’s was seated at a table across the room from us. We found it a bit peculiar to find bottles of wine at their table, even though Ma’s has a strict non-alcoholic menu. During our meal, we asked a different waiter if we could speak with the owner. Failing this, we tried to flag one of them down multiple times while they were passing our table, but our attempts were deliberately ignored. Eventually, with enough persistence, we were able to get the attention of one of the co-owners, Su.
She came over to our table and we warmly greeted her, complimented her on the food and told her that we are regulars at the restaurant. We then brought up concerns that had been floating around amongst the community doubting whether their meat was indeed halal. At this point, Su turned to all of us and admitted that she does not want to lie to us. Then, to everyone’s surprise, she told us that due to the volume of food that Ma’s goes through weekly, it is sometimes difficult to procure the necessary supply of halal meat, and in such circumstances, they order regular, non-zabiha meat. Specifically, she mentioned the following: (1) lamb is always halal (2) chicken is halal 80-90% of the time (3) beef is usually not halal.
We explained to her that as Muslims, being “mostly halal” doesn’t cut it, but we thanked her for her honesty in the matter. Another owner came by and asked what all the commotion was about. We told him about the rumours surrounding their meats supply. Even more surprisingly, he proceeded to deny everything, and claimed that their meat is 100% halal always. We then pointed out that his co-owner, Su, just directly admitted that their meat supply is not always halal. He was baffled, and turned to her and said something in Mandarin. Realizing that the gig was up, he conceded and left the table.
Thereafter, the waiters also acknowledged that their meat is not always halal, but that they “try their best.” Specifically, Kevin, who was adamant when we entered the restaurant that their meat is 100% halal all the time with no exceptions, conceded that in fact it is not always halal.
From the behaviour we have seen from this encounter and prior attempts, it seems that Ma’s had deliberately trained their staff to lie about their meat being 100% halal all the time, and were it not for the honesty of Su, would have kept up the charade indefinitely. In light of today’s discovery, I feel it incumbent on all of us to inform the broader Muslim community of their unlawfulness, fraud and exploitation. Posted on December 25, 2017 |

★☆☆☆☆ Staff here is very rude. Was a regular patron but no more. Have seen servers misbehave with guests several times. Happened to my wife and sister too when they went without me. Manager does nothing. Not sure the owner knows or cares Posted on October 13, 2017 |

★☆☆☆☆ Just had the most horrible service of my life at Ma's Restaurant!! We used to like their food but after this sort of service I highly suggest you go spend your money somewhere else because it will only leave you with a horrible time, being yelled at, and being threatened with having cops called on you.
Yes, you read that correctly, I said YELLED AT! On Monday July 3rd at around 8:30pm we (party of 2) were at Ma's for dinner. They seated us in a middle table and it was quite congested there. I'm in my last trimester of pregnancy so sometimes feel a little suffocated in tight spots so asked if we could move to the side table (there was one that had just gotten empty). They told us no because they're seating someone else there. By now a good 10 mins had passed and noone had come yet to take our order or even bring us water. Finally my husband hunted down a waiter so he could get me water and we can order. Then the side table opened up again so we asked once again if we could move, and they refused. Since I wasn't feeling good in the congestion we decided to leave at this point. We just quietly got up, told the waiter who had literally just stepped away from our table with our order to cancel it and walked out.
The waiter got upset that we left and started screaming and yelling at us and followed us outside towards the car. He was upset that we had drank their tap water. My husband being the calm person told him to stop yelling and that he'll pay the 2 dollars for the water. But he wouldn't listen and just lost it at us, their were passerbys who had gathered. He didn't care that he was swearing at us in front of kids there or that I was pregnant. My husband even tried to go inside to pay them the 2 dollars but the waiter continued yelling and kept saying he'll call the cops on us because they cleaned their table for us and gave us water. By this point we were pissed too so we said okay go ahead call the cops. He actually did call the cops, talked to them for a min or two, I'm guessing the cops told him this is nonsense and they won't come for this because he came back and said its okay noone is coming.
I understand it may have been a bit annoying for the server that he seated us and we left before eating, but that is no way to treat someone. Oh and if you think well that's just one waiter and it doesn't speak for the restaurant's management, well then you should know that not one single person from Ma's tried to stop that waiter or said absolutely anything. They went about as if this was completely acceptable behavior from their staff. Definitely never coming there again. Posted on July 4, 2017 |

★★★★★ Went there two night in a row. Food is amazing. I would highly recommend it. Best Halal Chinese food I have had outside of China. Service is very quick. The staff is average but do not let that discourage you from going. Liked everything I ordered; chicken corn soup, noodle bowl, chicken with chilies sauce... Posted on January 20, 2017 |

★★★★☆ Extremely good! Quality ingredients and a very nice setting. We got the salt and pepper fish, the garlic shrimp, the house special fried rice, the orange chicken, and the Chinese hamburger. (Total was about $60) The fried rice was AMAZING. Definitely get it and the Chinese hamburger, which is basically a giant dumpling. The servers were a little rushed but they weren't rude. There's also complementary ice cream which was very nice. Definitely try this place out, you won't be disappointed! Posted on January 10, 2017 |

★☆☆☆☆ This is the worst restaurant I have ever been. All attendees are very rude. Food was not good, not cooked well, not prepared good enough. Manager was the even worse. When I complained he was rude. DO NOT GO MA'S RESTAURANT TO GET INSULTED. I was very ashamed to see that a halal restaurant workers can act like this to their customer. Posted on April 22, 2016 |

★★☆☆☆ This chinese restaurant is a hit and miss with the quality of their food. Forget about the service, absolutely unpolite and they definitely do not have time to wait on you. No one even served us drinks...not even water! Food comes out with very long wait times in between. Some dishes were OK, some were great, others were just not up to par. Nice touch to add free soft serves, bonus for children. If you have eaten at well known halal chinese (such as ones in Southern California and the now closed establishment Eastern House in the Bay Area) you know what to compare with. The staff here cram you inside and do not care at all, but they had the audacity to run outside and ask me why I didn't leave a tip. I explained that a tip is gratuity for service performed....after spending $100 on dinner, I could have been a fly on the wall, they didn't care. Not at any point during dinner did the staff have any concern if my family needed anything, or plainly just checked if the food was good for us....but they made the time when it came to questioning me about not leaving a tip. That's right, you don't deserve a tip if all you did was throw the plates of food on our table and disappear. Here is a tip: Train your staff what courtesy is in a restaurant establishment. I guess to some it does not matter, however, to me, common courtesy to customers is golden. Posted on February 14, 2014 |

★★★★★ Excellent food. Service was very friendly and fast. Green Onion pie was yummy, and so was the hot and sour soup! Posted on April 5, 2012 |

★★★★☆ I thought it might be also owned by the Jamillah family who owns Mas' in LA but the food definitely tastes different. The onion parathas are good but not the same texture.
I also tried the broccoli beef and chicken chow mein. They were pretty good. Posted on March 22, 2012 |

★★★★★ I am a visitor from Boston and decided to try this restaurant with a friend of mine. In general, Chineese restaurant service is average or below average but, here, the host was very kind and knowing that we were first time customers, she went out of her way to make sure that we enjoyed our (lunch hour) dining experience. This may be an exception but, dining here was a good experience. The servers were not rude at all, the place is clean, food is excellent. Yes, there is an ice cream cone machine for free servings. I have to say that this has been one of the best chinese restaurants I have been to. The menu has "Islamic Chinese cuisine" written on it. Posted on November 30, 2011 |

★★★☆☆ In comparison to bay area halal chinese restaurants, they have the best service, kind waiters. The food is good. They could be cleaner. Posted on July 13, 2010 |

★★☆☆☆ Where do I begin. to be fair, let's breakdown the experience:
1) The restaurant closes at 10pm not 11pm. We got there at 9:50 and they seated us telling us that we need to order right now. We were there for the first time. Well it's understandable to rush since it was closing time.
Food Quality/Taste: (3 stars)
2) We ordered Garlic Chicken and Fried rice. The food was at best Okay. Was not spicy at all.
Environment: (0 stars)
3) Oh boy, this is the whole reason for me writing the review. I signed up on Zabihah to write this. There were some weird flies in the restaurant. A lot of them. They were really really small and don't know what type. Looked like flies that come on rotten food. At first we thought it's just one or two but when we noticed other people in the restaurant using there hands to buzz them off, I realized we are not the only ones. By that time we were half done with the food.
Free Cone: One plus point was the free cone machine they had.
I'm not going to bother going to this place again. Posted on June 9, 2010 |

★★★★☆ Thought we'd try this place out after reading the reviews on here and on Yelp. We ordered a lot (enough for lunch the next day), and pretty much everything was tasty! I'm not a fan of the sweet dishes but my hubby loved the Chicken Szechuan and the General Tso's Chicken. I loved the huge shrimp in the shell with the jalapenos. Try the chinese hamburger....well tasty! It's an added bonus that this place is fully halal aswell as authentic chinese and not a mish mash of indo-chinese (asian masala) as most places selling similar food are! Posted on May 27, 2010 |

★★★★★ Our family of nine went there for dinner. Seating was great, restrooms were clean. Most importantly the food was excellent. After dinner there's free soft serve ice cream! The entire family enjoyed it and we are looking forward to our next visit! Highly recommended Posted on April 14, 2010 |

★★★★★ Great quality and flavor. Good service. If you miss how Darda used to taste, try this restaurant. Our favourites are Chicken with assorted vegetables and the Hot and sour soup. Posted on January 12, 2010 |

★★★★★ I love this place !! They have great Zabihah Chinese food at decent prices. They offer many Dinner and Lunch specials and have great service. The setting is great and I definitely recommend trying this place out. Posted on September 3, 2009 |

★★★★☆ Had the Mongolian beef and Spicy garlic chicken. Both pretty good. The service was fast, but we had to ask for water and forks. The free soft serve ice cream is nice. Not bad as an alternative to Darda which gets pretty crowded. Posted on March 29, 2009 |

★★★★☆ I'm so glad Ma's decided to reopen with zabihah meat. This place is good. Food is tasty, service is fast and accurate and the premises, including the bathrooms are clean. There's even a soft serve ice cream machine for guests to enjoy after dinner. I will go back. Posted on December 25, 2008 |

★★★★☆ Dined here on the evening on Nov 17. Most of the food was really good. The Mongolian lamb and beef broccoli are especially good. Top it off with free self-serve ice cream. Mmmmm. The pricing is also very reasonable. If you go here for dinner you can usually eat for about $11-12 per person. Tums up! Posted on November 17, 2008 |
