★☆☆☆☆ STAY AWAY FROM THIS PLACE !!! After reading all the reviews I decided to try this place and I was so disappointed with the taste of the food that I only took few bites and left it ! I had the beef burrito and it was just plain and simple disgusting !! I went with friends and they did not like their food as well the fajita tasted like a Pakistani masala dish and quesadilla was bland! This place is pricey and disgusting ! Posted on March 31, 2013 |

★★★★☆ Alhumdolillah, I was very pleased with the meal and service I had at Mariachi. The food was delicious, the place was clean (which is a large feat for any halal restaurant in NYC), and the staff was nice. I was very pleased and I look forward to returning tmorrow. Posted on October 23, 2012 |

★★☆☆☆ Positive: Wide selection of Halal Mexican food.
Negative: Non-tasty food with slow service in a small place.
Overall: I wouldn’t come back to this place even though it is probably one of the only halal mexican restaurants in the northeast. Posted on July 28, 2012 |

★★★★☆ I really enjoyed their decor. The seats were comfy but the lights were little dim but oh well. The reason for giving them 4 stars is because of the service. It took them abt 20 mins to bring the food and the place was empty. I enjoyed their kabab platter and their hummus is tastyyyy. I didnt enjoy the chkn wrap much so avoid that. I'd like to try other kabab food the nxt time i go their. Overall its a good restaurant. Posted on April 18, 2012 |

★★★☆☆ The ambiance is lovely - so warm and cozy. The fajitas ordered by the couple one over from us were huge, and served sizzling on on hot pans.
Our meals however were disappointing. My enchilada tortilla had the texture of boiled flour. The beef was amazing, as was the salad. But that tortilla just killed the whole thing for me. My husband ordered nachoes, which he really enjoyed, but I felt were overly smothered in just-bearly-melted cheese. In fairness, I think the quality of your meal depends on what you order. The fajitas looked intensely amazing. The moraccan food at the other neighboring table looked equally as yummy. I'll go back, for sure. Just avoid nachos and enchilada! Posted on March 10, 2012 |

★★★★☆ Mariachi's is one of the few good Mexican halal restaurants in the city. The portions are decent sized and the service is good. Nice place to relax too. Only been there once but haven't had the opportunity to go back. Posted on February 18, 2012 |

★★★★★ Marakesh Mariachi is a gem tucked into an obscure urban abyss. The restaurant is wonderfully decorated and holds a very calming and almost whimsical ambiance. The restroom facility is immaculate and ornate, with a distinct aroma of vanilla and jasmine...wow
The food is fairly priced and competitive with the street vendors of Manhattan. The quality of the food is drool-inducingly superlative. The chicken, beef, and lamb I was served was spiced delicately and was quite moist and juicy. This is quint-essential comfort food.
Lovely experience, and a nice escape from the hustle of NYC. Definately Recommend! Posted on May 25, 2011 |

★★★★★ Delicious the Beef Fajita perfectly cooked medium rare and juicy, great flavors. Yummy crispy nachos drizzled with cheese .
Service was quick and the waitress was very nice .
the prices were reasonable. And the atmosphere was nice. I recommend every one to give a try. Posted on November 14, 2010 |

★★★★★ Awesome place, period. Hole in the wall, but nicely updated. Decent ambiance. Amazing food, love the Beef Fajita sizzler, great taste, good quantity, tasty sides. Middle Eastern food isn't bad either, but Mexican food is delightful. The service is amazing. They will bend over backwards to make you happy. Posted on November 13, 2010 |

★★★★★ Being a couple of blocks from the UN, the diplomacy bug must have rubbed off on me. See, Mexican and I aren't on the best of terms. I've never been a fan. But this quaint little place has warmed me up just a little bit. Must of been the quesadillas & friendly staff. We'll have to try the Morocan menu the next time around. btw, you have to be insane to compare it to Taco Bell! Posted on May 6, 2010 |

★☆☆☆☆ Been here on my last visit to New York and after reading quite positive reviews on here, i thought i should give it a try. I arranged to meet friends I had not seen for years there, who came from philly to Manhattan just to see me. This was unfortunately not a pleasent night. Food quality was awful, by far the worst mexican i have ever had, and that includes Taco Bell. We have quite a few halal mexican restaurants in london which i can compare this to, but that food was not worth eating, and pretty much all of us left more thn half of the food on the table.
We waited forever on our appetizers and drinks, then got half cold food, with tacos and enchiladas being very soft, as if they were heted up in the microwave. Service was pretty bad as well. The waiter / manager of that night was very intrusive in our private conversations and had to comment on anything we would say, to the point that he started a political discussion with us, when all we wanted to do was to catch up with each other. We paid $85 + Service for this poor night out, and i can only recommend anybody who would like quality food to stay away from this place. However, if you love to get into conversations with the staff on a night out, then go ahead. This is the place to be. Will def. NEVER go back. Posted on March 2, 2010 |

★☆☆☆☆ Me and my husband just got back from this restaurant, and honest to god this has got to be the worst restaurant I have ever visited.. The customer service was very crapy. We made our order and we got the wrong order, it wasnt even busy, our drinks didnt come out until we were done eating and the food tasted NASTY. The pricing for the portions is TOO EXPENSIVE. The size of a quesidella is the size of a small pita bread. SAVE YOUR MONEY AND DONT VISIT THIS PLACE!! Posted on December 28, 2009 |

★★★☆☆ This place is under renovation until December 9, 2009 so please visit after that.

★★★★☆ Cozy atmosphere. Good staff. Very accommodating. Both Mexican and the Mediterranean side of the menu is pretty good. Recommendations- Fajitas (any kind), Grilled Chicken Salad, Chicken Pasta, and the Meat Platter. Always had a wonderful time there for a laid back meal with friends. Posted on July 27, 2009 |

★★★★★ We had this restaurant all to ourselves one evening & enjoyed both the Marakesh & the Mariachi menu's! Really nice food & lovely little romantic spot, just under street level. Gr8 for couples. Try not to walk past it, without going down the stairs & trying out something from their menu. Posted on November 12, 2008 |

★★★★★ I don't know of any other Mexican/Spanish restaurant in NYC to which a comparison can be made. but these guys are truly making an effort to make your experience a good one. The prices are fair, the food is better than adequate and the service is prompt. The menu offers a wide variety of choices, so who cares if there's another Halal Mexican restaurant in NYC anyway? ★★★★★ Great food, more than reasonable prices, and a great staff. This is the type of place to plan a trip around. I've gone here three or four times and have been very pleased with each experience.
NOTE: I've only tried the Mexican part of the menu, but I have no doubt that the Moroccan half is equally tasty. Posted on August 27, 2008 |

★★★☆☆ tastiest guacamole i have had since i left california. the staff is normally pretty happy and pleasant. they are always accomodating of strange requests for things like a lamb kabob sandwich with guacamole ... i always like this place. portions are not huge for meat bearing platters but more than adequate. cozy and comfy... you can also order delivery from seamlessweb.com Posted on June 17, 2008 |

★★★★★ The food at this restaurant is outstanding. Not only is one of the best Mexican food I have ever had but is also the only Halal Mexican restaurant I know. The service is great and I would recommend it to anyone to go there. I loved their Chicken Fajita, I also had a side combo Falafel Hummus from their Marrakesh Menu it was deliiiiiiiicious. I love this place. Posted on February 9, 2008 |

NR Also it is in no way possible for us to charge somebodies credit card without their consent since they have to sign the receipt. These customers fully agreed to paying the service fee which they were informed of. When these guests came in to have dinner, the waitress served them and their party of 9 to 11 people to the best of her ability as all the workers always do. Also, the portions were generous as usual. It is very strange to have such a review written about the restaurant as most of our hundreds of customers are quite pleased with every aspect of the place. Unfortunately not a great deal of people usually write reviews about their visits; however, for the most part, all of the people who have written reviews are well pleased as we would like all of our customers to be. As for the tiny portions, most of our customers find our portions to be quite large and often have to take the rest to go since they are unable to finish their meals and they always keep coming back. Finally, the management is always open to hear any problems our customers may encounter for this is how we come to know our short comings. Thus we are able to improve our service to ensure the satisfaction of our customers. Posted on February 5, 2008 |

★☆☆☆☆ This comment is in response to the three comments below: First, I did not want OR expect an explanation for our experience. My origianl comment was MY opnion and I'm entitled to saying/explaining exactly how we were treated. The original message was intend to, perhaps improve your customer service, as all three comments refer back to 'managment always being open to hear any problems.' Second, an apology on your behalf would have been greatly appreciated. Third, since when does it take 45 mintues-1 hour to bring out appretizers which were the nachos drizzeled with cheese?? Fourth, my orignal comment states that I've been there before and everyting was 'great', so obviously this incidnet had to do something with your management at that particular time. AGAIN this is MY point of view, and hopefully you are able to take this as constructive criticism. Posted on February 4, 2008 |

NR As salam alaikum wa rahmatulahi wa barakatuh. Dear Brothers and Sisters in Islam, I am one of the workers at Mariachi Restaurant located in Midtown, NY. I am writing in reference to two recent reviews that were posted on this website by “ThReEtChArM” and "Moe_ipak@hotmail.com" on January 26, 2008 and Feb 1, 2008, respectively. It seems as though both of these individuals were part of the same party since following this incident we have removed the service fee. This was our first day to introduce the service fee, which is a tradition of many NYC restaurants. We explained to our customers that they would be charged such a fee. However, after seeing how strongly this group of customers felt about it after reading their review, we decided to no longer implement it. Unfortunately the writers were not pleased with their visit and therefore felt that they should give misleading information in regard to the restaurant. First off, if the customers felt that the service was so “terrible” and the portions were so small, they should have approached the head manager and complained about their experience. He would have gladly fixed whatever problems there may have been. Posted on February 2, 2008 |

★★★★★ This restaurant is very nice. It is really cozy and well-decorated. The waiters were pleasant and brought our food right away. The food was very good, halal, and tasty. The price for the food was affordable. I reccomended this restuarant. Posted on January 31, 2008 |

★★★★☆ This is one of the very few nice, sit-down halal restaurants in NYC. The ambiance is overall very nice and the service is good too. The place is a bit hard to find since it is basement-level and attached to Marrakesh Restaurant. The food is prepared fresh and served sizzling at the table - I tried the chicken fajitas and it was quite good. The neat thing about this place is that you can order from both the Mariachi and Marrakesh menus for the same meal! Posted on January 31, 2008 |

★☆☆☆☆ we were there recently and had a TERRIBLE experience!! I have been there before and everything was great, however, this time around I actually regretted going there. They offered nothing but poor service, ridiculously small portions, and our food took over an hour to be served. To top it all, when the bill came we decided to give them a small amount of tip due to their terrible management, and we were ridiculed by the manager as he said "this is an insult to a waiter". When went to pay the bill he charged us $29 in tip on the credit card anyway. You're better off having a home cooked meal, at least you wouldn't have to deal with rude management and tips!!! ★★★★★ This restaurant is amazing! It took us a little while to find it, its location being a little inconspicious on the street, but this place is one of the best places I've ever eaten. Great service and beautiful cozy Moroccan decor. Every single things we ordered was fresh and delicious. The best part was that after we were done the owner brought three desserts for us absolutely free. The chocolate Mousse cake was AWESOME!!!!
Make an effort to come here the first chance you get! You won't be disappointed, I promise. Posted on November 19, 2007 |

★★★★★ We tried this place on our trip to NY from Chicago. This by far is the best zabhia Mexican place in the US. We had the shrimp and steak fajitas and a few other dishes. This place was the highlight of our trip. Can’t wait to go back! Posted on August 27, 2007 |

★★★★★ Wowwweeee this place is AWESOME. IMHO I make great Mexican. I might not bother anymore so long as this place is around. Delicious, not too heavy, good portion size, fresh tasting food and fantastic decor as well. The bathroom is the most creative use of space I've seen in ages. Posted on July 26, 2007 |

The tast was exellent and the price was reasonable and the service was outstanding. Posted on April 30, 2007 |

★★★★★ I have eaten at Mariachi many times and I love the food. As others have already stated, it's very hard to find halal Mexican food. The service is good as well as the location (Midtown). I really like their beef and chicken quesadillas as well as their shrimp fajita dish. I also like the fresh squeezed orange juice. It's delicious. The portions are generous, which is not common at many restaurants. As for the couple that stated "you're better off going to Taco Bell," I really don't know what they're talking about because there is absolutely no comparison between the two. Mariachi is way out of Taco Bell's league. Posted on April 29, 2007 |

★★★★★ first i would like to say alhamdullilah that there is even such a thing as a mexican resturant that is halal! It is not often that you find that. I have eaten the mexican food here numerous times and it never falls short of the best mexican i have had in a while. the one thing that stands out to me is the guacamole it is made with jalepenos which is anything but not bland and that is the correct way to make it. mY roomates love it to and they are not muslim one time i brought it home to share with then and they exclaimed wouw this is the best mexican food ever! seriously! i reccomend anyone to go there whether you eat halal or not its gret Posted on April 28, 2007 |

★☆☆☆☆ My husband and I came here in August and found the food to be untasteful and a waste of money. You're better off going to taco bell and getting a bean burrito than eating this. Skip the trip and just eat something else. Posted on December 8, 2006 |

★★★★☆ Excellent mexican food, but pricey. But hey, where else can u get halal mexican?
I prefer ordering out now, the restaurant itself is small and most of their business is "to go". Please be careful of the female waitress. Out of the 5 times she has handled my bill, she has overbilled me 4/5 times. Once she overbilled me by $40!...
If you order online, the morrocan portion of it allows you to enter a coupon code "ANZU20" which will get you a discount.

★★★★★ This place was AWESOME!! My cousin took me here while I was visiting in NY and at first i couldn't believe there was such a thing as halaal mexican. ★★★★★ The Mexican food here is awesome! It's so great having a halal dining out option that doesn't include Arab or Desi food. It's a nice change. The fajitas, enchiladas, and quesedillas are excellent. The place is a bit small and the waiter was a bit inattentive because it was crowded but the food is worth it. If I lived closer, I'd go here all the time! Posted on January 7, 2006 |

★★★★☆ I've been here twice so far and both times the food was excellent. Consistent quality, good selection. The food is a little expensive for the service, but i guess small places have to keep up with the competition somehow. Posted on November 24, 2005 |

★★★★☆ I was on visit to NYC from Belgium and printed a list of all Halal restaurant in NYC and after reading all the reviews I couldn't resist but go and check Mariachi out. It was great! Finally eating mexican food other than fish and veggies and Halal on top of that... We actually went twice! My friend from NYC tryed the couscous and I had a little test and I have to say that it was very good! The people are nice, the place is very quiet for dinner (I hear that lunches are a bit crowded). I really recommend this place. The guacamole is excellent by the way! Posted on October 11, 2005 |

★★★★☆ Nice decor, located towards the corner of 53rd and 2nd. The food was good, although I thought the portions were a little small, although I did leave the restaurant full. Nice people working there too. Posted on August 25, 2005 |

★★★★★ Yeah, this place is hard to see from a car because its below street level. Overall excellent place to take your family. Moroccan decor, although they serve both Mexican and Moroccan. We had the Mexican; we had the steak fajita and a beef enchilada with guacamole dip. I also had mango milk shake and my wife Turkish coffee. Everything was scrumptious!! I am so happy to have found an authentic Mexican place with quality cuisine and service. Thanks Zabiha!!!!!!!!!! Posted on April 30, 2005 |

★★★★★ Just went here with a friend based upon the amazing reviews I had read off of zabihah. The place is phenomenal! Service, food, and decor are simply fantastic, Masha'Allah! It's a wonderful environment that pulls you out of the daily humdrum and fast-paced world and seats you in a very serene situation. In regards to location - I noticed some folks had trouble finding the place. Walk down 53rd btwn. 3rd and 2nd Avenues. There's a sign for Mariachi at street level (meaning at level w/ the pavement). (If you see a sign for Marrakesh - that's fine; it's the same restaurant w/ 2 menus.) There's a staircase that leads you down below street level. The location of the restaurant is across the street from a book store. Hope that helps, Insha'Allah. Posted on April 28, 2005 |

★★★★★ It exists, and the food is excellent. You have a choice of two menus, Moroccan or Mexican. It was originally a take-out place but after being listed on Zabihah increased dine-in interest prompted them to renovate and install a seating area. Nice small intimate environment. Great food, great service Posted on March 21, 2005 |

★★★★★ My husband and I went to Mariachi after reading about the place on this website. The reviews were right on! We ordered the chicken burrito as well as the steak fajitas. The burrito was tasty but the fajitas stole the show; the beef strips were served sizzling on a traditional hotplate with all the trimmings. We loved this opportunity to taste authentic HALAL Mexican cuisine; the funny part is that we had to travel from Texas to New York to experience it. Posted on December 10, 2004 |

|
★★★★★ I ordered the steak fajita and the excellent presentation of the food deserves to be mentioned. Although the dish was a bit expensive, the quality of the food was very high and definitely the best mexican food I ever had. The decor was simple but cozy and unique. I will be coming back again inshallah to try more mexican dishes and at the sister kitchen Marrakesh. Posted on November 29, 2004 |

★★★★★ Delicious! Fresh, healthy food prepared anyway you like. They have the American-type "WRAP" sandwiches (which are the thing in NYC) with Grilled Chicken & Mozzarella to the Spanish dishes such as Enchiladas and Fajitas.
Mariachi (and Marrakesh) are actually the same restaurant with two different kitchens - One for the Mexican cuisine and one for the Middle Eastern & American dishes. (I'll put Marrakesh review under Marrakesh).
Their delivery service is very quick as well.
Recently - my job became part of "Seamless Web" where you can order your lunch from a variety of restaurants online. Not only have I been able to order HALAL certified food everyday - I've also gotten some of my colleagues addicted to Marrekesh & Mariachi!!!
I've also been to the restaurant (before being able to order on-line). It is a very small little restaurant down a small stairway on 53rd St - where you could pass right by without seeing it. The decor is simple with the touch of the Middle East. Not very many tables - a nice quiet place to dine. The owner is a pleasant (AND RELIGIOUS) man. Posted on August 17, 2004 |
