HALAL SUMMARY
The owners of this restaurant are Muslim and have confirmed its halal status.
★★★★ a group of us went here for dinner. you have to call ahead as seating runs out very quickly. the food was very good, grilled lamb and spices, rice dishes, chicken casserole with fat noodles. one downside is they do not serve naan with the casserole sauces. the staff was very helpful in explaining the menu and dishes. beware the casserole dishes are for four people and too big for one person to eat alone. perhaps they should extend their hours and open on sundays. we will definately go again. ★ If you call to inquire where Silk Road buys their halal meat from, they will hang up the phone. I really do not understand why Muslims have this insecurity when asked where they buy their halal meat from...I personally do not think the chicken from Maple Lodge is halal whereas others do. I think it is my right not indulge at a restaurant that may buy from Maple Lodge... Posted on March 11, 2009
★★★★★ You will find friendly, relaxed service in this authentic Uyghur (Northwestern Chinese Muslim) restaurant. I went on a Wednesday night at 8 pm and it was full. Be sure to try the spicy laghman (freshly made noodles) prepared with lamb and the lamb seekh kebabs - but practice your chopstick skills at home first! Pass on the nan (which did not seem fresh) and stick with the lamb kebabs and the lamb soup. Each dish is really enough to serve 2 people. Check out this recent article in the Toronto Star.
