★★★★★ Let me start off by saying that finding halal food in Buffalo is a mission, and restaurants owned by Muslims providing strictly halal food are something to be treasured and patronized. That being said, this restaurant not only lives up to Buffalo's halal food scene's standard but also lives up to North American standards! I have to admit that I was a bit apprehensive after reading mixed reviews about this place, seeing the small menu, and the outside of the establishment which still bears the name of the restaurant that was there before. However the inside of the place is clean and kept in immaculate condition. As soon as you walk through the door you smell this heavenly incense that transports you to a cafe somewhere in the Middle East. After I took my seat, I was greeted by brother Ibrahim who was extremely kind. I ordered the lamb kabsa and baba ganush. As i waited I could hear someone in the back chopping and dicing. This food was prepared fresh, made to order! After about a 10 min wait, everything was brought to the table along with pita bread for dipping into the baba ganush. The kabsa was impressive consisting of a large plate filled with about 5 juicy, hearty pieces of lamb on the bone on top a bed of fragrant, colourful rice and a decent salad on the side. You can tell this dish was authentic with garnish of onion slivers on top. Needless to say the portion size was excellent. The other person in my party ordered the chicken kabsa and that was impressive as well. The lamb just fell off the bone, and I loved that it didn't have that gamey lamb taste. It was cooked and seasoned perfectly. We were also provided with hot sauce (which was really hot!), and Ibrahim assured us if we needed more all we had to do was ask. I think I should also mention that while I was eating people were coming in and out of the restaurant exchanging salams. Apparently a lot of practicing brothers frequent this restaurant Alhamdulilah, and this added to my comfort and the overall homely vibe of the place. The baba ganush was rich and creamy and had a lovely smoky flavour to it. The pita was a bit dry and hard, but I won't hold this against them as I did not order and came with the meal. I was a bit disappointed that I was not offered soup after reading some reviews saying patrons were offered after entering. The only other thing that could have the made the experience even greater was if they offered some kind of dessert to finish off the meal. But the food quality and generous portions more than make up for these tiny deficiencies. Overall I had a great time there, and this will be my new go-to spot when I'm in this area in the future. 1 lamb kabsa, 1 chicken kabsa, 1 baba ganush, and 1 can of Sprite all came up to about $34 and I consider it money well spent! ★★★★☆ The Kabob House and Grill is located in the old Kashmiri Kitchen location. I still think the Kitchen should have remained in their humble and smaller location. However, it is again good to see new businesses opening up around town. Kabob House has interesting selection of food, typical Mediterranean foods with persian mixed in. The food is prepared fresh and tastes good. The portions are decent sized. The one exceptional thing is they provide a bowl of soup to every customer, whether you are eating in or taking out.
The place is very "family" oriented, so it seems anyone walking in the door can end up serving you. The only thing I would like is a menu to go or a website/FB page with menu. Posted on January 10, 2016 |
