★★★☆☆ This is a full-service Nigerian restaurant located in the Foxhurst neighborhood of the South Bronx. The restaurant advertises "authentic African food" and the menu lists: jollof rice served wtih meat stew or fish, fufu served with egusi soup (peanut soup, palm soup, vegetable soup), waachye (rice and peas) with beef/goat meat stew, moi-moi (red beans with pepper and fried plantain), banku with grilled tilapia, and more. The restaurant has about 5 tables with seating for 15 people or so. Parking is available on the street, but given the location in the South Bronx, you'll want to leave your 1970 Mazda Cosmo at home. The restaurant's address is 1339 Prospect Ave, but the entrance is on East 169th street, which is the address posted.
The proprietor brought out a sampling of the dishes available before ordering on the night this reviewer went. The beef/goat stew had a strong flavor that's difficult to describe and unique from other cuisines. The rice and beans were delicious and a great base for the rest of the meal. The peanut soup and palm soup, while probably very well made, were not to this reviewer's taste. Strict vegetarians will leave hungry as all they can eat here is the rice.
The ginger drink ($3) was made in-house from blend of ginger and lemon, making a spicy, sweet, and slightly sour drink.
Overall, West African food is generally not to this reviewer's taste. But the food here is very well-made and the service is as attentive and down-to-earth as it gets. Overall 3/5 stars for quality and 4/5 stars for value. Definitely worth a visit if you want to try something different from the usual Arab/South Asian halal fare. Posted on December 1, 2014 |
