184 Hagley Road, Birmingham, West Midlands B16 9
Part of the expanding Akbar's of Bradford chain, Akbar's Birmingham specialises in the sizzling pan-cooked baltis from Baltistan, an extreme mountainous region North of Pakistan, served in a modern, contemporary setting. There is a dedicated prayer room upstairs, but you need to ask the staff as the restaurant doesn't advertise this. Added on November 30, 2009 and last updated 10 years ago

★★☆☆☆ I went to Akbars twice now, both times on invitation. I felt vey uncomfortable being there as they serve Alcohol which for a Muslim it is Haram.
I will not be visiting there again even on an invitation.
My rating is based on the fact that a 'HALAL' food place serves alcohol. Posted on February 25, 2013 |

★★★★★ Simply Fabulous!!! Lamb chops are divine. Aloo Palak Daal is fantastic as are most of the other dishes. Been here dozens of time. Very reasonably priced and therefore best balti restaurant in Birmingham.
Don't take notice of the negative reviews. Go try it for yourself. Only slight downer is that they serve alcohol. Posted on June 3, 2012 |

★★★☆☆ Beautiful decor, great staff and very welcoming.
I was absolutely shocked walking in and seeing they had a bar, it spoilt it for me and my husband.
However, we still decided to eat there.
Male/female/disabled facilities.
Food was great, quite over priced. A few dishes were missing off the menu which was a surprise, but I substituted it for other dishes and it was nice. Naans were huge, a family Naan can feed up to 4 on an average portion.
We waited ages for our bill. Posted on November 8, 2011 |

★★★★★ Excellent decor, service and food. Place is huge! Had duck tikka for starter which was nice and different. I also recommend the lamb karahi and if you order naan get the family size which is good for upto 4 people and is served hanging on a stand with a hook. Definitly a place to try. ★★☆☆☆ GO IF YOUR ENGLISH
DON@T I|F YOUR ASIAN
My wife and i visited ASkbar's Birmingham today and we left the restaurant being extremel ashamed to be asian
Akbar's food was imbecable, but the service we recieved was the worst i have ever experienced
My wife and i were seated at the same time as an english couple sitting next to us. I overheard the english couple stating that this was their first visit upon which the waiter (Shohail)started fawning upon them and assuring them that anything they wanted, even off the menu, could be made for them.
When it was Shohail's turn to take our order he was extremely disintrested and frankly rude and i had to repeat my order a number of times as he was disctracted talking to other waiters and looking elsewhere.
During the night i noticed that the english couple were getting more attentive attention than my wife and i. Instances included the english coule having their drinks served in glasses whilst we merely recieved our drinks in bottles (presumable they had run out of glassess). The final straw came when the english coule recieved a complimentary fruit platter as desert due to the time they had to wait for the meal. The time the english couple waited was exactly the same as my wife and I as we had arrived at the same time. I was expecting a complimentary platter also (its not the fruit i was interested in more the gesture). All we recieved was two lollies. The english couople realised the difference in treatment and were apologetic towards us, but my wife told them their was nothing they had to be sorry about it was the restaurant who had failed in their service towards us.
As I paid the bill, my Wife ask Shohail the waiter why we had recieved different treatment to the english couple? Shohail's reply that managment gave all english customers recieved compliemntary desert incensed us. Their was no pretense that the other couple were valued customers or big tippers (in fact this was their first visit) - just a simple statement that english customers recieve better treatment than asian ones.
Their wasn't much my wife nor i could say to that. I was in disbelieve and lost for words. Basically an asian restaurant, run and operated by asians had discriminated against asians. Thats racism.
I will never visit this restaurant again and i will ensure that all my friends and colleagues here of this digusting treatment. Posted on May 29, 2011 |

★★★★★ Have been twice in recent weeks.
Was surprised by the fairly negative reviews at the bottom - I presume the place must have changed a bit or they've learnt some lessons. I experienced none of the issues reported below - other than perhaps the low quality menu card (laminated).
Decor is fantastic. There is a waiting area, followed by a bar (yes unfortunately they serve alcohol) and then eventually the huge dining area itself. This is a very large establishment.
They have an army of staff - literally dozens of waiting staff running from table to table.
Service is excellent. The waiters were VERY friendly and on both occassions spent time talking to my children and giving them attention. Obviously this is a ploy to extract a larger tip - they knew it and we knew it, but so what? it was not out of place.
The food really is excellent. The lamb chops are amongst the best I have tasted. Honestly I couldn't fault any of the main food we had, it was all really good.
We had various grilled starters and various curries as mains, everything was to a high standard.
The deserts were perhaps a rung down on the ladder - they were reasonable but nothing special.
The facilities looked very clean - sadly I didn't visit the toilets but judging by the rest of the place I can only presume they were well maintained.
The prices were reasonable. They aren't cheap, but then again given the high quality of the place; the number of staff; the quality of the food - the prices could have been a lot higher. In fact, I was surprised both times that they were still only in double digits (only just) for a party of 6 to 8.
Expect to have to wait for a table when you arrive as this place is very popular and always full.
It's pretty noisey so don't be expecting a romantic table for two dining experience.
My only concern is that they serve alcohol.
Thing is, if they didn't serve alcohol, then they wouldn't have load sof non muslim customers. If they didn't have lots of non-muslim customers, then the place would no doubt be very different as muslim customers are generally quite a different breed of animal. No doubt the customer service would be the first thing to go followed by half the items on the menu.
So the serving of alcohol is a mixed thing. As a muslim I cannot condone it, but as an aficionado of delicious food and decent dining establishments I can see the benefits it brings to me at this restaurant without having to be overly exposed to it's presence.

★★★★★ I went to Akbar's restaurant as it was recommended by my sister. As I walked into the restaurant I saw the stylish decor and felt comfortable straight away. As the waiter showed me to my table, he spread rose petals across it. That was the first thing I didn't expect. Once we sat down and were given the menu to look at, I looked around at the layout of the restaurant and saw the perfect romantic setting. We were given all the time we needed to order. We started on a seekh kebab which was cooked fresh. The was spicy and tender, just the way it should be. Then, the main course arrived. We ordered lamb balti, chicken makhani, nan and rice. I was amazed to see the nan, which was bigger than expected and presented on a type of stand that I wasn't familiar with. The lamb dish that I ordered tasted to perfection. The meat was tender and the, exquisite. The chicken makhani was creamy and a fine taste to it. The service matched the quality of the food. Overall, I would recommend Akbar's to anyone. I'm sure I will come again very soon. Posted on June 19, 2010 |

★★★☆☆ When I first saw the building and the décor I was expecting a lot more than what I got. Although the food was pleasant it wasn't anything special. The naans look a bit scary as they come out on a upstanding cast iron thing which looks like a war weapon. They have spent a lot of money on the look of the place but then have things like laminated sheets as the menu's. I ordered the rabbit as i had never had it before, I was expecting something gamey and succulent but instead got something that tasted like dry chicken breast. I have mixed opinions about this place. NR Decor, great. Food, good. Price, good. Value for money, yes.
I don't recommend it. Why? The service is absolutely awful. The waiters stand around striking poses and thinking they're god's gift while you have to repeatedly ask for the same thing. Water. Cleaning the table (which they don't do themselves even if it's filthy!). The menu (which, coincidentally, was dirty when it arrived). They lack the brains to offer deserts or anything else but get the bill over when you've just finished eating!
No, it wasn't busy, the service is just plain rubbish.
The waiters have sone disdain for their customers; perhaps they're failed models and hate working there!! Posted on March 3, 2010 |

★☆☆☆☆ We should have seen the reviews on the other sites before visitng Akbars in Birmingham, The service was awful, the food was messed about, we waited over an hour for our food to arrive on cold plates, and then they tried serving meat to a strict vegetarian. we gave them 3 chances to put things right, but on each occassion they let us down, in the end we refused to pay and had to call the police, who then informed the manager that they we illegally holding us in the restaurant. other diners were in shock and some even cheered in support because even they had bad experience that evening. AnotherManager took our complaint and then apologised for the way we were treated. my opinion isthere are better restaurants in birmingham visit them. Posted on January 3, 2010 |

★★★★☆ Very good food, the curries were ace. chops were good, only two let downs, the naan tasted a bit like a fake pizza base. and we got moved from one table to another in the middle of our meal. 6 of us went and all of us bought lamb chops for starters. Posted on November 30, 2009 |
