★★★★★ Al Wadi is located on South Africa Street immediately after the South African Embassy (when you are going from Lafto towards Karl Square) and opposite to the International Community School (ICS).
The restaurant is very popular and is always crowded, particularly on Fridays. The menu is comprised mostly of Yemeni dishes. Other Arabian dishes like shawarma, falafel, and salads are not available.
On different occasions we tried rice with chicken (grilled, roasted or fried), chicken tawok, hummus, mixed grill and Tibs. Rice and chicken can be ordered in half or full portions. The half is big enough for two adults and two small children. The grilled and roasted chicken were very good. The fried chicken was okay. The food is brought out in a big plate to be shared by all. You can request for separate plates if you want.
The hummus was cold, probably right out of the fridge but it was good. Mixed grill was a combination of lamb, chicken and fish and was fine. Tibs was good but next time we will ask them to make it spicy. Note: Tibs is not on the menu so you should ask for it.
All female staff wear a hijab and men wear a Yemeni dress.
Overall the food is good and relatively inexpensive - Birr 400 (<$20) for two main dishes and three sodas. Posted on January 31, 2016
