The staff of this restaurant has verbally confirmed halal status. From the management: 'All our menu is 100% halal, however there is only 1 section that is 50/50 halal and that is SMOKED ITEMS that are cook on the some smoking equipment but not touch each other. Plus we have different utensils when we handle pork. We have some Muslim staff in our premises, and everything is taken very professional.'

★★★★☆ had the chappli kabab burger today
very good with the fries Posted on April 9, 2017 |

★★☆☆☆ Yeah why the heck did the new owner decide to put pork on the menu? I used to love this place and recently came to find swine on the menu. Unfortunately I already ordered my food. The owners name is Ali. Maybe he is Christian Pakistani? Posted on August 30, 2015 |

★☆☆☆☆ Unfortunately the new owner has started to serve PORK. I will no longer trust this place. Posted on July 2, 2015 |

★☆☆☆☆ Julie's has eliminated the worst reviews from both Zabihah.com and Yelp, mine included. I decided to rewrite it.
I had been going to Julie's since 2003 on a regular basis; generally I would eat here after jumm'ah prayers. Recently however they have undergone a change in ownership after the passing of the original owner Mustafa (from Indonesia) and boy have things changed. Never have I experienced worse service from a restaurant. Friends of mine who are also long time regulars had the same level of service that I did; it is a shame they don't have Zabihah.com accounts.
Twice in a row I went here when it was not very busy and it took over one hour for my hamburger to come out. The last time I went (2012), after waiting ages for my food they handed me a plate with my burger and a pitiful portion of fries. Upon taking a bite from my hamburger, blood oozed out and down my chin. It was disgusting. I took it back and didn't even receive an apology. The week prior to that, as I stated, a friend received similarly terrible service and he told off the staff in front of all present.
Many newcomers to Berkeley are unaware of the decline in service/quality due to the fact that they have reset their Yelp page and eliminate 1-star reviews (like my previous review) off from Zabihah.com. I believe that to be dishonest. Posted on March 22, 2014 |

★★★★★ Very good food. Halal. New owners are very friendly and gave my wife and I free chai. Good outside sitting area. I will be back for sure. The pita melts are very tasty. Posted on May 18, 2013 |

★★★☆☆ Per Mohammed, the Turkish owner, he gets ALL of his meat from a distributor in Hayward Universal Foods. On the weekends when/if he runs out of meat he gets meat from Indus untill he can order again.
Universal Foods - Talked w/ Ahsan, Iranian, at Universal Foods, gets ALL of their beef/lamb from Australia, but he won't tell me which company is the mea tfrom. Meat from Australia is usually halal and very good w/ the exception of a few companies. Ahsan won't tell me which comapny/slaughter house he gets his Chicken from, so i wasn't able to confim its authenticity. WallahuAlam. Posted on March 12, 2010 |

★★★★☆ One of my favorite Zabihah places in Berkeley......Initially use to go their when I would visit my friends at CAL for the MSA iftars, but now its a definite stop every time I am in NorCal. Even though it is mostly a self service place, I still love it as it has a decent setting and ambiance. I like a lot of their menu items but my favorite is the Roast Beef sandwich. The owner and staff are very friendly too. Posted on August 6, 2009 |

★★★☆☆ Julie's has been a staple of the UC Berkeley scene for a long time, but recently they have made a major change in the menu/cooking. Most of the food is Turkish kebab/shawarma now, and I found it very average (too salty, same food you can find in many other halal restaurants). The old menu/cooking was better. ★★★★☆ ORDER- Hamburger.
Results- Excellent, juicy, well cooked. .
ORDER- Pad Thai.
Results- Excellent, i have only had their pad Thai because it's halal, so I have nothing to compare it to.
ORDER- Mei Grong.
Results- Excellent, I prefer this dish to all others. .
Decor- Enjoy the weather and they have great seating on an outdoor patio that was
Comments- Impossible to find parking, even in the parking lot. If you are a walker unlike me (handicap) then make sure you make it here. They are very active during Ramadan, and I have enjoyed many meals during my university days in '97 here.
I wish them continued success Posted on March 1, 2009 |

★★★★★ I’ve been going to Julies for the past 10 years as a Student and non-student, and I still love this place. The owner is wonderful and engaging. If you’re in between classes at Barrows or that digustoid of the Architecture building at Cal, it’s a nice place to get a coffee, sandwich, soup or the biggest burgers in the East bay. It’s a favorite amongst students since it’s the post-Jumma destination and the owners generously offer their place for several iftars during each week at Ramadan. Posted on April 26, 2008 |

★★★★★ Its so hard to write a review when you are fasting. But this place is awesome. Fresh halal roast beef and turkey sandwiches. 5 star for sure! Everything is halal, I wish they had a sign! Posted on September 26, 2007 |

★★★☆☆ Love the halal cheeseburgers, I wish they served halal chicken too. They should cook the burgers on a seperate grill from the chicken, too bad. Posted on May 24, 2007 |

★★★★★ This is one of my favorite places in Berkeley, and I always try to go there when Im in town. My favorite is the Roast Beef Sandwich. The burgers are real good too (they give you two patties), and the Thai Chicken Curry is good too. The owner and staff are very friendly and they have been providing iftaars for fasting students during Ramadan for the past few years. Please support them! Posted on November 2, 2006 |

★★★★★ Great food! One of my favorite lunch places to eat. I love the burgers, although it's soooo much meat I usually have to take out some, which is wasting. I find the staff to be friendly. Posted on June 29, 2006 |

★★★☆☆ ***IMPORTANT*** I've been assured by the staff on many occasions that the burgers are halal. However, the other meat that is cooked on the same grill (the chicken) and with the same utensils is NOT halal. Posted on May 25, 2006 |

★★★★☆ Very good hamburgers, sandwiches, and Asian food. I recommend the hamburger, but it takes 10-15 minutes to make. Same with the chicken sandwich, so if your in a hurry I suggest getting one of the Asian dishes or a sandwich. Posted on February 12, 2006 |

★★★★★ Very good and tasty food. A good selection but don't get there just before they close since it's fresh food the choices will be limited. It has "outside" seating which is nice. Reasonable prices and good portions. Posted on July 3, 2005 |

★★★★☆ I liked the food a lot the one time I went there. Seem's to be a successful restaurant. I really liked the chicken dish I got there; lots of vegetables and meat. I'd definitely go back whenever I'm in the area. Posted on April 23, 2005 |

★★★☆☆ I hate to be the lone voice of dissent. I drove all the way to Berkeley from SF today and my experience was less than memorable. The staff hardly spoke English. The grill was being cleaned and nothing was available. First I was told only burgers aren't available, then I was told the chicken's not available. The staff didn't what was going on. This is my second time at Julie's and both trips have been disasters. From now on Im gonna stick to SF and go to Dune's. Posted on December 23, 2004 |

★★★★★ The staff is extremely hospitable. I went there for the first time after Eid prayers. Everyone, try the pad thai (spicy pan fried noodles, w/chicken or shrimp) When I ordered spicy, it WAS spicy, not at all like other places who claim authentic, but cater more to looks rather than taste.
Seriously, Julie's has the most tasteful pad thai, so far! The cafe is very clean & the servings are GENEROUS & not skimpy! Depending on what you order, some servings are enough for two people.
They also offer breakfast & lunch dishes, so something for everyone to taste. Posted on November 29, 2004 |

★★★★★ Julie's has awesome food, and it's all halal. The owners are Thai Muslims, so the food is authentic, healthy, and EVERYTHING is zabihah/halal. Posted on September 15, 2004 |

★★★★★ affordable, excellent healthy food, friendly staff, quick service, everything's impeccably clean. i've been going there for 6 years, one of my favorite places to eat in berkeley Posted on July 26, 2004 |

★★★☆☆ I didn't like the food at all. The beef, turkey, chicken were all cold and frozen. The beef sandwitch didn't taste at all. They do not serve real authenic food. Posted on April 23, 2004 |

★★★★★ i went to Julie's after Jumma prayer for the first time, and it was awesome. the food was excellent and the atmosphere was nice. There was a crowd trying to order inside, but the brothers were very polite and made sure I (a sister) was able to order. So even the customers were cool. I recommend this place to anyone looking for a comfortable place to eat. Posted on December 15, 2003 |

★★☆☆☆ I went to this place ONE time only and was very disappointed. I ordered me and my husband 2 hambugers. The owner gave us one burger and gave our other burger to another customer so when I finished eating my food my husband food was ready then. The food was not good anyway. The people were rude and didn't speak and didn't speak English much and didn't know what they were doing. They didn't even say sorry. Posted on December 14, 2003 |

★★★★★ i loveeeeee julies! the chicken sandwiches are the best, i have one everytime im in berkley. its a nice change to have a halal burger or sandwich Posted on November 8, 2003 |

★★★★★ I LOVE THIS PLACE!!! What more can I say? It is my favorite Muslim hang out. Simply because, EVERY time I go in there I end up seeing someone I know. Cool. LoL. I recomned the Curry Chicken. It's my fave.. mmm... chicken curry... Someone else in a review said it isn't Muslim owned, well for your info it is! And they always tell me Salaam Alaikum, so what's wrong with you? Go back and give it another shot. It is all halal! Posted on November 3, 2003 |

★★★☆☆ I called and they told me the place was halal. I think it is owned by Muslims too. I had a hamburger and it was good.
Closes early so you can't eat late indoors like other places. Posted on October 22, 2003 |

★★☆☆☆ I went to Julies Cafe, because I read about it in the San Francisco Chronicle, and I also heard about it from many of my relatives and friends about how good it was. The minute I stepped in nothing about "Julie's" seemed Halal to me, no islamic ayats, no sign saying it is halal, no muslims working there, but putting that aside, I asked the lady working there if their meat was halal, and to my surprise she said "NO, then says well MAYBE". I was pretty disappointed with that answer and didnt bother eating there. So I suggest everyone make sure before they just go and eat. Posted on October 7, 2003 |

★★★★★ You want halal AND healthy? This is the place folks! I love their chicken burger and their chili. Every time I come here, I never had a bad food experience. I would reccomend this place to everyone.. at least try it once! Even dieters can have chicken salads and stuff! Posted on April 8, 2003 |

★★★★☆ Julie's Healthy Cafe in Berkeley is located across the street from campus near Bancroft and Bowditch (next to Copy Central). The restaurant has become the Muslim hangout over the past two years, providing food for every catered event hosted by MSU or Berkeley Masjid. Julie's serves American food (burgers, salads, sandwiches), as well as spicy Thai dishes. I highly recommend the hamburger, spicy shrimp and spicy chicken. When he says spicy, he really means it. Everything is zabiha. Warning - the Julie's Healthy Cafe in Emeryville is owned by non-Muslims and does not serve zabiha meat. Posted on August 10, 1998 |
