★☆☆☆☆ Let me begin by saying that this review is based on the summation of 6 visits to the restaurant randomly over the last 2 years. As such, it is not a review based on a single expereince, but more a review of the "average" Walima experience.
Pros:
The atmosphere in the restaurant is amazing. I love it.
The food tastes fantastic. I love it.
The prices and servings are reasonable - some might say the servings are too small//overpriced - but I think they are fine, and for the atmosphere and taste - TOtally worth it.
Cons:
THIS IS WHERE IT ALL GOES DOWNHILL. :(
- Even on a busy night there are, at most, two people working the restaurant floor - service is quite slow... but you don't mind it so much because you are enjoying the ambience of the restaurant.
- The staff are INCREDIBLY RUDE!!! They are always the same staff and like I said, I have been there six times, so this was not an unfortunate fluke of bad luck. IT HAS ALWAYS HAPPENED. I understand that they may be understaffed and that financial viability for a small, independent restaurant in these economic times is difficult. HOWEVER, that does not validate what has happened (ESPECIALLY THE LAST TWO TIMES I HAVE BEEN THERE): Asking people to make sure they order at least one entree per person to keep this beautiful restaurant afloat is understandable. I have taken people there in groups because I love the restaurant so much, but my guests (to my utter shame and embarassment) were nothing-short-of THREATENED to order entrees because if we did not, we were "COULDN'T EXPECT TO JUST SIT THERE IN THE NICE PLACE AND NOT ORDER AN ENTREE; IT IS AN INSULT TO THE OWNER" ( paraphrased the words of the Moroccan gentleman there)
He went off on a tangent rant, even after we had expressed our understanding and had already decided on the main dishes to order.
- When we ordered our meals in groups, orders were frequently made wrong, and they ran out of things such as rice, or pita, or couscous and simply replaced those in individual orders as they pleased. We did not see it fit to try and fix that from our shock and fear from the tongue-lashing we had received earlier.
My last visit there was in mid-May 2011. Finally having been fed up with their service, I took a vow to never go back, and even tried to express my concerns with the manager, who simply brushed them off casually and chalked up the rudeness to the fact that the gentleman that was consistently rude to us was Moroccan. How do you like that??? I was in awe. Never have I ever seen such a fine restaurant stink in terms of rudeness.
Used to go in groups of at least 5 to 15 people. I consistently brought them good business, and planned to continue, until then. I am never going back and am now actively discouraging anyone else to, as well. Posted on May 22, 2011 |

★★★★☆ Excellent. A cozy cafe tucked into a row of stores 3 minutes from Medina Masjid in Toronto. The restaurant itself contains elements of authentic Moroccan decor, and is clean and very mellow. The waiter/owner was very pleasant, quick and helped us considerably. The food was good. I'm not familiar with Moroccan fare, so I can only say I enjoyed eating it. The dessert was frozen creme brule, so I would pass on that. Excellent overall. If you're looking for somewhere to go, that is a little bit more trendy then the typical Falafel joint, then try out Walima. Posted on December 26, 2010 |

★★★★★ I wanted to write a review about this restaurant because I had a great experience with my family. It was our first time to have Moroccan Food. We asked for the shrimp and chicken Tagine to be spicy, since they told us that Moroccan food is not hot spicy but flavourful spicy. The food and service was great. The owner came by to serve us tea and poured it from high above his head which I have never seen done before. I highly recommend this restaurant and ask for the owner to pour tea if he's avaliable, it's pretty amazing! Posted on June 13, 2010 |

NR Just a reply to Eldukae, the owner had to say something to you about behaving respectfully while sitting in the front of the restaurant with big windows because seeing a woman "sitting/hugging" on TOP of a man- to put it bluntly without being too graphic, in his restaurant made OTHER people feel uncomfortable. NR going in to this restaurant we were very excited...it was about 20 of us (all students in UNIVERSITY)...planning a surprise birthday....once we got there ... well the excitement ceased....
we waited VERY long for the food...the waiter seemed flustered that there were so many of us...he almost seemed upset that so many ppl came to his restaurant...
also between the kitchen and floor i think 2 ppl work all of it...which is ridiculous for a friday night...and then to make it worse when it came time to pay we requested seperate bills and he wsaid when u go to a "DINE IN" restaurant large groups dont get seperate bills,
whos he kidding....its not like we haven; eaten in other restaurants....then he proceeded to tell us it was bad manners that we were requesting this and decided he would advice us on our manners....
honestly if he had asked nicely we wld have all offered to pay together and share later...but the attitude did not really make us want to help him out
then we were told to calculate our bills ourselves and pay....so we stood there with a calculator for liek a good 20 mins calculating..
honestly i knw it can be tough running a small business... but this experience was one of a kind...
in addition .... the food did not reallly impress me either
so if u r a large group looking to have a fun night out... i personally would not recommend it Posted on January 8, 2010 |

★★☆☆☆ Had dinner with my husband. The owner (Mohammed) was extremely rude and inappropriate. He was dictating to us how to behave 'respectfully' whatever that means... and had no idea how to treat customers. The service was way too slow and food was Horrible!! we ordered the Chicked Bastille, Lamb Tagine and Beef Couscous. The Bastille was basically a Baklava gone wrong, wasnt sure if I was having main course or dessert. The Lamb was over cooked. and couscous was bland and tasteless. Basically the only thing good was the mint tea. In a nutshell this was our first and last time trying Moroccan cuisine thanks to WALIMA CAFFE.... Posted on December 13, 2009 |

★★★★☆ This is generally one of the best authentic Moroccan restaurant in downtown area. The food and service is great. The only thing I didn't like is that food portions is too small!! Posted on August 31, 2009 |

★★★★★ Flavourful, authentic Moroccan food in a lovely atmosphere. Mohammed, the owner, is a wonderful host and really makes you feel welcome. We had the Zaalook and the Chicken Tagine. Both dishes were flavourful without being too spicy. Mohammed recommended we end the meal with some Moroccan mint tea. The tea was excellent. Will definitely be visiting again soon. ★★★★★ Had Dinner with a group of friends (owner Mohammed) made us feel at home. All of our picky changes to his menu were accepted with a smile. Highly recommend his Harriri soup, for sure. Very nice restaurant with a good family setting and nice atmosphere for a perfect night out. Also owner refuses to sell alcohol as he prefers to keep it 100% halal. Br. Mohammed even offered us the basement to do our prayers. Would defintley visit again ! Posted on June 16, 2009 |

★★★★★ By far the most authentic Moroccon food in the city. I had the coucous with Beef and vegetables with the harira soup. It was served by the owner himself. The atmosphere is like no other. It made us feel the moment. Highly recommended. Posted on June 16, 2009 |

★★★★★ A group of us had a great meal here. Two of us (including me) had the Chicken Bastilla (excellent - crunchy, savoury and sweet), while the other two had tagines (which I am told were very good).
We each also had some excellent harira (a type of soup). This was all topped off with some great mint tea. In sum, well worth a visit. Posted on June 3, 2009 |
