★★★★★ We had heard about this restaurant on one of the desi radio shows and decided to try it out. Considering there are so many Afghan restaurants around the area, we didn't have any high expectations. However, after our dining experience, I have to say it is truly unique when it comes to the Afghan food flavors. We were told that the rest of the restaurants (Pamier, Bamiyan, Watan) were all chefs that were trained or were under the tutelage of the Bamiyan chef and the reason for all of them tasting more or less the same. The chef at Helmand is an Afghan chef on his own and remains true to the distinct Afghan flavors.
To begin with the restaurant is quite family friendly and has quite a big, well kept dining area. 50-60 people can sit and dine without any issues. We ordered a variety off of their menu (chopan kabab, chaplee kabab, chicken breast dinner, tandoori kabab, wazeeri and sultani kabab) and were very satisfied with all of them. The lady at the register actually gave us Bolani on the house to try out and that was excellent as well - it is basically like an aloo paratha (potatoes in roti); it had a bit of zing to it which was flavorful.
The naan was probably not the best however we were told there was something wrong with the dough in the particular batch and it didn't rise and soften as much as it should have. There were a couple of non-desi guys at the counter who actually attested to it so I will give them the benefit of the doubt on that.
All in all, will definitely be returning and highly recommended. Posted on November 30, 2014 |

★★☆☆☆ We had a group of about 25 people. The food was not that tasty. Very bland. Will not be returning to this restaurant. Will drive a little further south and go to Watan Kabab. Posted on September 12, 2014 |

★★★★☆ The place was nice and elegant, fast service and friendly staff. The lady at the cashier recommended I try the Tandoori Kabab dinner and it was truly amazing. Posted on July 19, 2013 |

★☆☆☆☆ Save your time and money. Do not go here! Drive an extra 5 km and go to bamiyan. The rice is stale and tasteless. Was so upset after I had this. Never going here again. Good riddance! Posted on June 25, 2013 |
