1380 South Main Street, Milpitas, CA 95035
Dosa Bawarchi was reported closed or not Halal 7 years ago Serves Indian cuisine, specializing in dosas, utthapams, biriyani, etc. Claims their Hyderabadi biriyani is the most authentic in the Bay Area, and it may well be. Halal status has been confirmed multiple times by staff members, including a Muslim worker. They said that all their meat (chicken, mutton, etc.) is halal, and that they obtain their meats from Indus, which is a halal meat supplier around Berkeley, CA. This restaurant used to serve only non-Halal meat in the past. Owners are probably non-Muslim. Lunch buffet till 2:30pm. Dinner buffet on Thursdays, normal dinner menu on other days. Closed on Tuesdays. Added on October 5, 2011 and last updated 12 years ago

★★★★☆ Verbal assurance from staff that all the meat is Halal. I tried the chicken 65 (pretty good), the Masala dosa (also pretty good) and Yogurt rice (good). The Masala dosa comes in a very large triangular shape, which is a little bit different from most places, but still tasted the same:)! The chicken 65 was spicy, but good. The yogurt rice was interesting. Much more mushy than what I was expecting but still tasted good. Plenty of seating inside. Service was a little on the slow side, but it was a Friday night, so they were pretty busy. Posted on September 22, 2014 |

★★★☆☆ I have always heard that this place is really good, but that they do not serve halal meat. I decided to try out their veggie items with my wife one night. Out of curiosity I asked our waiter if their meat is halal. To our surprise, the waiter responded that all their meat is halal, and that he was certain of it since he was Muslim himself. I called up the restaurant another day, and the person answering the phone also assured me that all their meat, including the meat served at the lunch buffet, is halal, and that they get their meat from Indus, which is a halal meat supplier in Berkeley, CA.
Their halal status must be new, because the staff had assured my sister-in-law that their meat is not halal a few years back.
The food was excellent. Their specialties are their dosas and their biriyani, both of which are phenomenal. The dosa I had at dinner was nearly 1.5 feet in diameter! We also tried their Fish65 appetizer, spicy fried tilapia (I think) - the fish was delicately fried, juicy and amazing! A lot of their food is pretty spicy, which is great for me, but may not be good for some people. Their dessert was OK, not as great as their other food, but who cares? The rest of the food is fantastic.
The lunch buffet is also good. They have seperate meat and veggie lines, with 3-4 meat items in the meat line. They also had several different achar (pickle) items near the front.
The place seems to have a bar, but I did not see any liquor bottles on the shelves, only glasses. I am guessing they serve alcohol on request.
UPDATE: Summer 2013. Went here with a large group for the lunch buffet. Unfortunately, the food was no longer as good as it was on the previous occasions I had visited this place. The restaurant seemed quite disorganized, in terms of tables being cleared, dosas being served at our table, etc. Perhaps it was a bad day this day, but I have heard from friends who visit this place often that the quality of food and service here has declined lately. I am changing my review from 5 stars to 3 stars. Posted on December 18, 2013 |

NR I would avoid this place because they serve Alcohal. There plenty of halal options available in the area that do not serve Alcohal and are really good too. Posted on August 27, 2012 |
We have clearly labeled this and other restaurants that serve alcohol so that those who wish to avoid can do so. |

★★★☆☆ The menu at Dosa Bawarchi states that all meat served is halal. Curries are good - generous portions and not too much oil. The dosas have a large surface area, but not much filling. They taste good, though. The lamb thali had a great variety and taste.
The service, although competent, was a bit inefficient. For example, the waiter noticed we were a family, and did not tell us portions were family style when we clearly were ordering one dish per person. Thus, we ordered way too much. Also, the appetizers and dessert took way too long - the whole point of appetizers is that they come before the meal. The waiters were dressed very informally (jeans, baseball cap, Kanye shades). Not used to special requests re: children. However, the owner was very friendly
Ambience - good. Classical sitar, not too loud and imposing. Wide, open space (not packed in like cows). Very family-friendly environment, but not intrusive. Posted on February 29, 2012 |
