The owners of this restaurant are Muslim and have confirmed its halal status. From the website: 'For the conscious diner, you can be assured that all of the meat served Halal.'

β Although the service is quite slow, the food has wonderful with rich tastes and unique flavors. We enjoyed a variety of appetizers and entrees from Mandi to Shash tawook, felafel to grape leaves, and everything was worth going back for. No wonder it\'s well regarded and recommended frequently. The food was good, especially the baba ghannoush. The girl sallamed me over the phone which was sweet, people donβt usually do that. Desserts were excellent, homemade-quality. I recommend the harisa and baklava-theyβre like what our ablas used to make. Posted on October 12, 2020 |

βββ Food has always been excellent, service yesterday sucked. Two families who spoke Arabic got served before us despite coming in later. It took multiple times asking and eventually walking to the counter to finally get water. We were 2 adults and 2 kids, yet automatic gratuity (which the menu mandates for 5 people or more) was added. Unimpressed! Posted on February 18, 2019 |

ββββ The food is very cold. Beside that, they kept arguing that the food is hot. I cannot imagine myself in such Resturant with its management. From my point of view, do not waste your money if you are looking for good Resturant.. Posted on April 16, 2016 |

I try to stop by here every Monday when I'm in town for work and honestly, I've never been disappointed. Aside from the amazing food, the hostess here is such a pleasure to deal with that it makes this place over the top. A must visit if you're in the Tampa area. The food is always fresh, and the taste is so authentic. Posted on March 28, 2016 |

This listing was recently removed from Zabihah.com. The food and service is really good and the price is reasonable for adequate portions. The owners are Muslim and do not allow alcohol on the premises. Some people are mean and report bad things about this restaurant when they eat at establishments that sell alcohol, but trust when they are told that the meat is halal. Posted on April 21, 2014 |

ββββ WARNING: THE MEAT IS NOT ZABIHAH.
After spending the day at Busch gardens, we decided to eat at Petra since it had very good reviews on Zabihah.com. When we entered, just to double check, I asked if the food was halal. I was told "most of our food is halal." Since this was a strange response, I inquired about what food was not halal and was told that the beef shawarma was not halal. I decided to avoid the beef shawarma and order something else. When we sat down to eat, the waitress who had overheard the conversation told us that she felt it was her duty as a Muslim to inform us that although the food was "halal" it was not "zabihah." After thanking her, we got up to leave and were stopped by the person who had told us the beef shawarma was not halal. This person (seemed to be higher up, maybe the owner's wife or daughter?) tried arguing with us about the fiqh of zabihah and then boldly told us that there was not a single restaurant in America that had zaibhah meat.
While I am fully cognizant of the scholarly difference of opinion in regards to meat, this restaurant purposefully attempted to deceive us about the status of their meat. When a Muslim comes in asking about the meat, it is understood they are asking if it has been slaughtered properly. If I had no qualms about eating non-zabihah meat, I could have eaten at any one of the numerous restaurants in the area. Furthermore, the claim that the beef shawarma was the only item that is not halal gave the distinct impression that it was the only non-zabihah item on the menu. In fact, considering her later statement that all the meat was non-zabihah, it makes no sense for her to have singled out the beef shawarma as not being halal; unless, of course, the purpose was to deceive the customer into thinking the rest of the meat was zabihah.
Had it not been for the excellent waitress who informed us about the meat, we would have taken the restaurant's word about the meat being zabihah. This is not a restaurant I would recommend, not the least because of their deceptive nature. Posted on December 30, 2013 |

βββ This is not the same Petra any longer after reopening.
They still get good business from the old customers and their referrals, but they are just saving the day. After experiencing the new Petra, I believe many people won't go back.
They got their fame by delicious foods, low prices and big portions. Now they cut the portions half size down, but kept the same prices.
Service is very very slow. No one watching your table. Last time they completely burnt the kabab and served as is with no shame!
We used to go there all the time but we won't any longer, may be once every 3-4 months. May be after realizing what they are doing wrong and losing business, they may bring the old quality back. Posted on February 11, 2013 |

I read all the reviews and decided to give this place a try. Coming back from Busch Gardens, my family decided to hear to Petra. The outside of the restuarant was not impressive but once in, I was pleasantly surprised. The decor was good, and the place looked clean and well lit.
The food here was amazing. We order the boat family platter. It was more than enough for our family, and left the place with lots of leftovers. The platter had different meat items served on yellow rice, with sides of Hummus, Babagounesh, salad and bread. It was by far the most delicious middle eatern food I had. Would love to go back whenever I come to Tampa. Posted on December 26, 2012 |

I have moved out of Tampa a few months back but surely miss this place. I have not seen anything equal to the quality of food served here. Though it takes a while to get the food to the table, the taste and the quality is stupendous. If I happen to visit the area, will definitely stop by! Posted on May 30, 2010 |

Terrific food! We order dinner from them occasionally when there is not time to cook. They give you a lot for your money and enough for 2 meals for a family of 5. Awesome shawarma sandwiches! Terrific buffet during Ramadan! Posted on May 28, 2010 |
